Help me build the first Ashtanga Yoga Shala in Newburgh, New York: #AYNBRG.
This project is about bringing a yoga home to the community of Newburgh. Newburgh is a highly diverse city, the community is growing, and people are beginning to migrate from the city to open their businesses and make this their home. Newburgh is also in need for a yoga center.
The word Shala means home. We recently purchased a piece of land with two structures on it, from the city of Newburgh. One of the structures is a 750 sq feet garage, which we will be turning into a Yoga Shala, it's name will be Ashtanga Yoga Newburgh or AYNBRG. The structure is from 1925 and needs a lot of work, my boyfriend and I, with the help of friends and family will be doing most of the work as our budget is limited.
After much thought we realized we need professional help to have the structure be safe and last for many years as a home base for Ashtanga Yoga Newburgh. This campaign is to help us fund the project, which entails:
- hiring an engineer or architect to design the renovation plan
- hiring a contractor to help with the most difficult work
- work permits
- dumpster fees
- building an exterior wall and doorway
- installing a new window
- buying two new large windows
- insulating the space
- rebuilding the ceiling
- flooring

We will build a wall with insulation where the garage door is now and make a doorway.
The ceiling will need to be redone and painted. Wall to the right will be sheetrock and insulation. The back window needs to be replaced and supported with beams at the top.
The walls are cement blocks so we will be adding insulation and sheetrock to them. We will be cutting out a whole into this wall to have a window.
Beams need to be replaced, supported and painted.
This will be the entrance wall with a doorway and a big window.

Ashtanga Yoga Newburgh or AYNBRG will offer daily Mysore classes, afternoon meditation classes, weekly Sunday community events, sound baths, music, cooking classes, reiki, workshops and more. It will be a place of healing for everyone regardless of their age and income bracket. The vision is to hold space for people to come together and share health.
I have began hosting one Mysore session a week and a monthly Sunday Yoga & Kitchari event out of my apartment here in Newburgh. The community has responded really well to the Ashtanga Yoga, and are exited to have a new home. Each week a new person finds their way to the temporary AYNBRG home. There is limited space in the temporary shala (10 people max)and, and we will no longer have the apartment in October, so this building project is time sensitive. We have three months to get the work done so that I can continue to hold space for these beautiful people, and grow the offerings!
Some businesses like AntiGravity On The Hudson have been kind enough to open their doors to AYNBRG when there were more people then I could fit :) In the meantime I have also created a series of short beginners videos for students to practice on other days of the week, as with my current schedule of teaching part time in the city and rebuilding the house during free time, I can't hold more weekly classes. As for myself, my name is Bibi Lorenzetti, I am an Ashtanga Yoga Teacher based out of NYC, where I teach weekly at the Shala Yoga House. After living in the city for 9 years, I finally decided to make the move upstate last year, in the hopes to have more time to connect to nature and like minded people, and create a space where to bring people together. I run yearly retreats with the same goal in mind, to create community, to spread the amazing teachings of Ashtanga Yoga, and live life in a sustainable, simple way.
