My name is Asha Maran and I am an 11th grader at Chantilly High School in Northern Virginia, USA.

In the 2016-2017 school year, I applied for and was accepted as a Fellow in a program called LearnServe, an organization that helps students like me with a passion to make a difference in our communities and schools. Together, the other fellows in the program and I learned about the knowledge, business tools, and relationships we would need to be social entrepreneurs, to create a successful venture that can identify and help solve problems in our world.

My interests have been in education and healing. On my visit to India this past year, I met with several school leaders to understand their functioning and needs. I learned about expenses needed to maintain a school, and the funding that is available to them. I identified St. Anne’s Matriculation School, KK Nagar West, Chennai as the school I want to support. This schools supports the poor and the needy in their community. It had its humble beginnings in 2004 as a crèche to take care of the babies of the working women with the assistance of the Sisters of Charity of St Anne. Kindergarten and Primary school to cater the children up to class V were started. In 2010, class VI was introduced and it grew up to class VIII . In 2016, class IX and this year 2017 class X were introduced. Most students in the school belong to local laborers in the immediate neighborhood. Total number of students this year is 487. This academic year, in April 2018, the first batch of students of class X will appear for the public examination. They have a need for a Photocopier and a Projector Room.

I also identified " Advesa Charitable trust” as a trust I want to support. It was started by Dr. C. Shanthi, MD, Fetal Cardiologist, in October 2008 with a motto to serve children from economically backward families, through reading and knowledge based methods. It started as a free children's library before the establishment of the trust. It has since completed 9 years of service, with the library being operational between 5 pm and 7 pm, Monday to Saturday. It provides opportunities for children to read and learn every evening. The trust also conducts various awareness programs and workshops with the help of volunteers, artists and professionals from various fields. It has also supported educational expenditure for many children ( 5-10 kids per year) over the years. Most recently, regular Yoga classes have started in the library teaching the kids the importance of healthy living.

In this journey, I also identified Jeevodaya, a Hospice and Palliative care place, which provides care to the dying to die with dignity. I was impressed with the love, patience and dedication needed to care for the dying. Their need for bed sheets, adult diapers, comfortable clothes for their patients is on-going.

I estimate the cost to support both these programs will be around $3800. I have not set up a not-for-profit organization as yet, but I plan to do so in the near future. However, these needs are more pressing and urgent and I will appreciate any kind of support. As a result, this will not be a tax deductible donation.

Anything will help! Thanks in advance.
