How many of you wonder if our history books told us a complete story of ALL people.    Here is a story of brave African-American men and women you probably don’t know about.    They helped settle a vital community in the 1800’s and their legacy is vibrant today.

Who Knows This History?

Tucked away in Easton, MD is a spectacular architectural gem of historical significance:  Ashbury United Methodist Church.

Did you know?

-This church was built in 1868 and remains in continual use?

     - Frederick Douglas thought so highly of this effort that he made his first trip back to Talbot County, MD since his escape to freedom, to dedicate the church building?

-That this church anchors the Hill Community, now thought to be the oldest free African American settlement in the USA?

Did you know?

-This church continues its mission of social justice and equality  by offering soup kitchen meals, delivered meals to shut-ins and elderly and delivered produce boxes to families in need?

-This church has given service to the African-American community in Talbot County during every important milestone of American history since it opened its doors in the 19th century.

NOW-

Ashbury needs our help in order to continue to serve.

The kitchen and fellowship hall needs crucial repairs in order to continue its mission of feeding the hungry.   Without improvements in the kitchen and downstairs, Ashbury will not be able to keep open their food service to the homeless, the shut-ins and the elderly.

A series of grants through historical entities will help keep the building from further deterioration but these grants do not cover expenses to improve the facilities that serve the current social mission.

The community itself has raised close to $15,000 start the work.  There is a vulnerable population depending on their services.    Since the beginning of the pandemic, their services are needed more than ever.  Right now, they are cooking and working from their homes.

With your help, the congregation of Ashbury United Methodist Church can continue to feed the body and spirits of those in need for the next 200 years!!
