Asbury Park is under siege by developers and landlords. For a decade development has been king, and housing prices have skyrocketed, leading to an unprecedented wave of gentrification. Many low income families have been forced out of Asbury Park, unable to pay rent. Yet developers and landlords continue to raise rents and rake in millions in profit. City government has largely turned a blind eye.
The Asbury Park Affordable Housing Coalition was formed to respond to the housing crisis caused by corporate development and greed. We are a volunteer grassroots organization that lives, works and organizes around the needs of our community. In March 2020 we celebrated the passing of the Affordable Housing Ordinance in Asbury Park, an ordinance we wrote and spearheaded. It maintains that any new development in Asbury Park must set aside an allotment of affordable units for low income residents of Asbury Park. A huge victory, but still not enough to protect the community, especially in the face of a pandemic that disproportionately punishes low income communities.
Since then we have knocked on doors and spoken to many tenants of Asbury Park. Those still here have gone without meals, school supplies, and proper healthcare visits and prescriptions in order to pay rent. Many forced out of Asbury due to rent increases have been separated from their family, school, teachers, coaches, jobs, loved ones – the very fabric of their community. Some have experienced homelessness and housing insecurity.
Our efforts to reach the community where it is, from the ground up, compel us with a certain and urgent purpose: Asbury Park tenants need stable housing. This is why we started the campaign for Rent Stabilization, and why we wrote the Rent Stabilization ordinance that will be sent to the ballot box this April. Through our local canvassing efforts we have spoken to over a thousand people that support our ordinance for rent stabilization. Over 700 residents signed our petition for rent stabilization. We have handed in our petition to the city, attended city council meetings, lobbied for our ordinance. But it hasn’t been enough.
It takes resources to fight the big money that landlords and developers will be pouring into a campaign to defeat this referendum, ensuring the displacement of more low income residents. Because of the high margins in an unregulated rental market, corporate developers and landlords have deep pockets and unlimited financial resources to spread disinformation. We must counter their falsehoods with the facts to bring out voters in April.
While they may have the money, we have the people. We are now calling on our people to pitch in financially, whatever amount (small, medium or large), so that we can continue to push community driven policies and fight back against de-humanizing corporate interests.
