About This Documentary
ArtifaXual
is a film that documents the Black History 101 Mobile Museum project founded by Khalid el-Hakim, former Detroit Public School teacher and current doctoral student at the University of Illinois.  The Black History 101 Mobile Museum is a collection of over 7000 original artifacts of Black memorabilia that dates from the Trans-Atlantic Slave era to Hip Hop.  Collecting artifacts from flea markets, yard sales, antique shops and other venues over the past 25 years, Khalid has used this unique collection to teach Black history in public spaces around the country.  Thousands of people have experienced the Black History 101 Mobile Museum in 24 states on over 60 college campuses, numerous K-12 institutions, libraries, religious institutions, conferences and cultural events.   Khalid’s work follows in the tradition of Black Museum movement pioneers such as Dr. Margaret Burroughs and Dr. Charles Wright.  Committed to telling the story of the Black experience without any holds barred,  Khalid uses the artifacts of the Black History 101 Mobile Museum as a counter-narrative to mainstream American history that has excluded, marginalized or minimized the history of Black people in America.

In 2006, Khalid el-Hakim asked Professor Griff of Public Enemy to be a guest speaker at one of the exhibits and this began a ten-year partnership, which has expanded the visibility of the museum all over the country. The film will delve into the challenges, obstacles, and success of having Public Enemy’s Minister of Information, the most revolutionary and controversial artist in hip-hop travel with the Black History 101 Mobile Museum.

Why We Need The Money
We need your financial support to cover the expenses of equipment, pre-production, editing, travel, marketing, distribution, fees and licenses to prepare ArtifaXual to be released during Black History Month 2017.  Khalid el-Hakim and Professor Griff will be using their relationships in entertainment, cultural and academic communities to pull together the highest quality content and technical quality for this documentary.

Starting in May, Griff and Khalid will travel the country documenting stops along the Black History 101 Mobile Museum tour, interviewing visitors and living legends about the importance, impact, and value of this unique Black museum.
