Kassidy is like any other 12-year-old girl. She loves spending time with her family, loves to make people laugh and dreams about her future.
Unlike most 12-year-old girls, however, Kassidy has to cope with something that affects her life on a daily basis. Something big.
When Kassidy was two-years-old she was diagnosed with autism. Her parents, Dena and Rick, were told she was non-verbal and low functioning. They were led to believe their best option was placing Kassidy in a group home.
Dena and Rick did everything they could to give Kassidy more, to give her a chance to dream.
Then something incredible happened. Against all odds, against everything Dena and Rick were told, Kassidy learned to speak.
At the age of nine, Kassidy started singing the ABC song. Soon after, she was using full sentences.
Even more astounding, Kassidy developed an incredible artistic gift.
She loves sculpting. She has made hundreds and hundreds of colorful pop-culture figures (everything from Elmo to Elvis) using Model Magic clay.
At 11, she taught herself to play piano. She has perfect pitch and can play songs she hears on TV and on the radio. She loves to sing while she plays.
She took her first official piano lesson this year.
Kassidy, once labeled low functioning and non-verbal, has quickly become a symbol of hope for parents raising children with autism.
Kassidy's potential is limitless. Her dream is to be an artist when she gets older.
The costs of raising a child with autism are extremely high. Insurance doesn't cover autism-specific therapies.
