Hi! My name is Jay- I’m 21 (fundraiser started at 19), trans masculine and trying to raise £8000 towards double incision top surgery (the amount going towards a referral and the surgery itself).
I have been secure in my identity as a trans person since 2013, and experience gender dysphoria daily.
Personally, my dysphoria is anxiety-inducing and actively effects my day-to-day life, confidence and mental health.
After 9 years and deciding enough is enough, I am pursuing top surgery for my own wellbeing.
Why am I fundraising?
Top surgery will allow me to live life fully and vastly improve my quality of life- allowing me to live just as any other young adult should- comfortable in my own skin.
Trans healthcare on the NHS is in a dire situation and contains extreme waiting lists, not helped by the pandemic.
I have been on the NHS Gender Identity Clinic (GIC) waiting list for over two years, and despite choosing a GIC with a lower wait time (33+ Months!) - I am still facing up to 3-5 years before my initial appointment and another 1-2yrs for follow-up appointments (only at these would Top-Surgery be considered as an option and then there is another waiting list to receive surgery).
My total waiting time likely being a soul-destroying 5-8 years minimum before top surgery (I would then be 24-27 years old before being able to live life as myself).
As the waiting lists are consistently growing, and with the setbacks of COVID 19 on these lists, it is extremely unlikely that I will receive the surgery I need as a young adult.
Private healthcare is the only foreseeable route I can go down in order to live my life without dysphoria whilst still a young adult.
Going private will allow me to receive top surgery within a year of reaching my goal and receive more successful results. Unfortunately, going private for surgery is costly and this is where I need help.
I am a full-time university student, soon to be graduate- I have very little income, and any future income will be allotted to living expenses, student loans and rent. Any donations, even small are highly appreciated.
What will the raised money go towards?
All money raised through this fundraiser will directly go towards a double-incision top-surgery with Mr. Miles Berry- an accredited surgeon, including the surgery itself, post-op binder, medication, overnight care and consultation (which will cost around £7095 for the surgery and care, £150 for the consultation).
The remaining money will go towards a top-surgery referral costing £450 from Gender Care (which will be 2-3 sessions with a qualified doctor) and travel. This will also allow for any hidden costs in case the surgery or any other component are more expensive than predicted (e.g extra medical theatre time).
Any remaining funds after my surgery from this fundraiser will be put towards other trans folk’s transition fundraisers.
