Art in our neighbourhood! Burnside Mural Campaign

We like to make things happen in our neighbourhood here at the Gorge Tillicum Community Association. We envision more art in our neighbourhood and the next project is a mural on Burnside Road. As we will not be running the Gorge Canada Day Picnic in 2021, we are doing this instead. We've got $5,000 set aside in an Art Fund that was raised from the Pancake Breakfasts and Strawberry Tea events during past Gorge Canada Day Picnics. We also applied for grants for further funding, and canvassed local businesses for some donations. The project will then depend on successfully meeting our GoFundMe fundraising goal to complete our needed budget. Should we raise more than our goal, the GTCA has committed to saving the funds in our Art Fund for a second mural at a different location in the community, hopefully next year.
The location is the large south side wall of the old building at 100 Burnside Rd W (on the corner at Wascana), which currently houses Cycles West. We have already met with the building owner, who is keen for this public art and will be contributing to the costs. Did you know this building was a grocer, a shoe repair shop, a hardware store, and a barber shop? There are steps down to the cycle shop from Burnside Road, and interestingly, the building was originally street level, but Burnside Road has been raised since then, making the main entrance no longer street level.
We have successfully received a 'Community Well-being and Place-making Grant' from the District of Saanich and we acknowledge the generous support of the CRD Arts Commission in the form of a grant from the Capital Regional District. We now need to just close the final gap!
