Art Based Small Business Needs Help During Covid19

#SmallBusinessRelief

The Bohemian Moon Artist Collective was founded in 2018 with the purpose of supporting the growing artist community in the Kansas City area. Through the Bohemian Moon Boutique, artist’s goods are sold both in the brick and mortar location and online through the efforts of its founder and the support of the community and artists themselves. In a very short time, the collective grew to include 26 local artists and makers in the community. With humble beginnings, in a very small space, the group was quickly bursting at the seams and needed to expand almost immediately. Founder Heather Benoit-Moll was saddened to be turning artists away for lack of available space and discovered that, while it was a good starting point, the need for more space was eminent if they were going to bring their vision to fruition.

This group has now been given an amazing opportunity for growth and expansion into the downtown Parkville area.  A beautiful 3,300 square foot space in the downtown Parkville Missouri shopping district was set to give artists the opportunities intended for the collective.

Since August 2019, the owner and founder has been working exhaustively to develop a space for growth.

This new space has been developed to include:

studio space for artists
event space for music and arts showcase
workshop/classroom space
retail space to support local artists

This community outreach is a tremendous opportunity for the group!

Studio space would give artists not only the room but also valuable tools needed to develop their skills when they lack these resources in their own environment. Artists participating  in the collective would be given access to studio space as well as artists in the community who would like to develop their skills without the major financial investment in the tools and supplies needed.

Event space would provide showcasing opportunities for local artists and musicians that would provide networking opportunities for featured artists, giving them a more personalized public platform that they might not get otherwise.

Workshop and Classroom space would give artists the opportunity to share their skills with the community through outreach opportunities. Mentoring relationships would partner established artists with emerging artists in the community with a special emphasis on the concept that we are stronger together and can help one another grow collectively.

Retail space will continue to give these artists an outlet for sales of their work providing them with the income needed to support their dreams and talents.

Efforts towards these goals showed a steady move forward until the unthinkable happened. The unexpected impact of the Covid-19 or coronavirus outbreak brought the business to a standstill. The physical retail location was forced to close its doors and all art lessons were halted immediately. Although the business owner's founder had put money aside for the expansion of this project, the funds began dwindling quickly with no income generated. In shop sales that had been supporting artists all over the community were put on pause, having a significant impact on those who depended on that income.

Our hope is that through the help of our community and through diligent efforts and the kind of grit and determination that we know we can muster, we can overcome this challenge. But we may need a little help from our friends and community.

This group is working to raise $11,500 toward the recovery effort to make this dream a reality.

An estimated $1,500 will go toward the cleaning and deep sanitizing effort of the space and to create necessary changes as we adapt our business to a new normal.

An estimated $5,000 will go towards the foundational costs of transitioning into the larger space including deposits, utilities and moving expenses as well as estimated adjustments needed to secure the business as an online sustainable source of revenue.

An estimated $3,000 will help catch up on lost revenues to support core members.

An estimated $1,000 of money raised will go towards paint and supplies to give the space the facelift needed to make it a beautiful space for showcasing their artwork, as well as partitions and fixtures for studio space and retail space.

$500 of money raised will help to offset the cost of marketing efforts to help the group engage with the Parkville community as well as recruitment of new artists.

$500 of money raised will go towards tools and supplies needed for workshops and classes.

Every penny counts as we move forward with this project and donations of all sizes are greatly appreciated!

Many of the artists participating in the Bohemian Moon Artist Collective are wellness practitioners, healers and therapists. Putting a special emphasis on the healing powers of art, many workshops have been designed as an educational tool to build a stronger community through art. The collective includes a diverse group of creatives, including several with disabilities and even an artist as young as 11 years old. A portion of artwork sold by Bohemian Moon comes from an inner city youth outreach program, working to support the growth and foundation of the community. The expansion of workshops and classroom space will give a better opportunity for established artists to work with these kids to give them the “next steps” in their professional development as artists.

Once we are finally able to get back to our "new normal" it will be critically important to offer support to a grieving community through the healing elements of art.

Our artists are committed to creating a positive and enriching experience that will plant a seed for generations to come. With your help, Bohemian Moon can grow to actually be the change we wish to see in the world!
