Archie's Ironman

Tax deductible
On July 18th, I will be taking part in the Eastbourne IronBourne event in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital . The catergory I will be competing in is the full ironman. This event is one of the most physically challenging endurance events in the world. It starts with a 2.4 mile swim, followed by a 112 mile cycle and finishes with a 26.2 mile run.

A bit about me. My name is Archie and I am 17 years old (I will be 18 when I compete in the Ironman) and I was a patient at Great Ormond Street Hospital when I was 3 years old. I was born with a disease called Hirschsprung's disease which I first became ill with when I was 2 1/2 years old. I was first treated at Leicester Royal Infirmary for investigative and diagnosis operations before being transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital where I underwent several more investigative operations before being diagnosed with Hirschsprung's disease. I initially spent 6 weeks at Great Ormond Street and the first stage of my treatment included having around 3/4 of my bowel removed and a colostomy bag fitted for 2 years in order to rest the remaining part of my bowel. After 2 years I returned to Great Ormond Street for the reversal of my colostomy bag. Unfortunately, the initial reversal failed and I ended up spending several months at GOSH, including celebrating my 5th birthday there, until the reconstruction of my bowel and reversal of the colostomy bag was a success and I was discharged at the end of that summer. It wasn't until I was 8 that I was finally given the all clear.

Great Ormond Street Hospital is such a special place, not just to me, but to thousands of other children. I remember a time when I was in probably the worst part of my treatment and an older boy on my floor had been cleared of a disease very similar to mine and he gave me his "get well soon" balloons and the rest of the gifts he had received. This was just one of many acts of kindness that happened to me during my time at GOSH . I want to give back to GOSH after everything they did for me. The GOSH charity provides rebuilding and refurbishment finance, support for families and patients, research into children's health and provides life saving medical equipment to the hospital. I hope that by competing in this ironman I won't just provide financial assistance for such a fantastic cause, but also create an image of hope for children currently at GOSH who are in the same position that I was in as well promoting a fantastic charity.

Thanks to Great Ormond Street Hospital and all their support, both in terms of the doctors and nurses that looked after me for so long, as well as those within the charity that provided happiness in a dark time, I can now help raise awareness and support for them.

I would really appreciate any support you could give through the link to my gofundme page below. Please like and share this page with your friends so we can spread as much support as possible for the Great Ormond Street Charity . Thank you, Archie x
