Archie's Fund

On the evening 24th July 2020, my dear little border terrier, Archie, had to be admitted to Anderson Moores veterinary hospital as an emergency. He was diagnosed as suffering from acute kidney failure. This followed on from an unknown illness in May, which had affected both his kidneys and liver, and for which he had seemed to have made a good recovery. His deterioration from seemingly good health this time, was sudden and shocking and following blood tests at my vets, he called to say that if Archie didn't receive urgent hospital treatment, he would likely die. On arrival he was scanned and blood tested and the outcome was that although there were possibly some signs of chronic disease, this was an acute kidney event, and the cause may not be found. He was admitted and has been in for a few days. At the moment, he is stable and making reasonable progress. However, these things can take a long time to resolve. The quote is eye watering - between £3000 and £6000 for acute kidney injury. This will be used to treat him until his kidneys have healed enough. At present he is receiving matched fluids, anti-biotics, blood pressure medication, and pain relief.  His creatinine on admission was 335 and three days on, it is now around 178. They cannot say how long he will need to be in as they have to wait for his kidney function to stabilize. Once he is discharged, he will need quite a bit of follow up and will need to see a nutritionist as he has a home cooked diet due to being prone to chronic pancreatitis. The money raised will also contribute to his follow ups. Unfortunately, Archie has been unable to secure insurance. He is 13, and despite the fact that he is a lively, playful and funny soul, his past history of stomach problems, mean that if I can get anyone to insure him, it has been for a miniscule amount at very high premiums. Archie is everything to me.  He was rescued via Border Terrier Welfare in 2008 and came to me as a companion to my existing dog, with a few behaviour issues. Over the years we worked through them, and he was inseparable from our little tribe. In 2015, he received a double blow - the sudden loss of my other dog, which tore him apart and the loss of my dad, whom he adored. In 2015, I also lost my last two family members and then in 2018 I was diagnosed with a rare ovarian cancer. The next 18 months were some of the worst of my life, yet this little guy, with his big personality, has kept me going. Sadly, the cancer has meant that I no longer have any savings left, which is why I am doing this fundraiser for him. And there is still significant uncertainty over my diagnosis, so I may still be looking at treatment. I can't begin to describe the profound relationship I have with Archie. He's my soul mate, my rock, my best friend and constant companion. I would be so grateful for all donations, no matter how small, to help to get my little guy better. He so deserves it.
