THAT'S 131 MILES

We are delighted to be able to launch our #noshame campaign for 2021 .

At ARC one of our main goals has been to help begin to change the conversation around addiction.

Why? Because stigma, discrimination, blame and shame compound the problem and are often barriers to recovery. And recovery doesn’t just benefit individuals, it benefits families and communities.

Shame, like addiction, leads to disconnection.

A disconnect that damages relationships and prevents people seeking help.

Together we can change that.

Our #noshame campaign will provide a platform that will allow people to step out of shame and into recovery, their potential and their future.

So, Whether you are someone struggling with a substance misuse disorder, or you are being impacted by someone else’s, it’s time to encourage conversations.

We want to help people by sharing stories in order to start to humanise addiction, recovery and hope within our society.

We are all unique, nobody chooses to be dependent on a substance. Anyone can fall into a hole, but when we shame people, we don’t allow space for them to change. We don’t help them out of that hole.

Addiction Is messy, and painful for everyone involved. It impacts the individual, the family and the community. But blame keeps us stuck.

If I blame people or circumstances in my life for my where I’m at, it disempowers me and keeps me angry. If I blame myself, it fills me with shame and guilt and keeps me angry at myself. Either way, blame is like being stuck on a hamster wheel that doesn’t allow us to move forward.

What we want to help people do is move towards a greater understanding of where they’re at and how the got there, to drop the judgement and embrace a more compassionate curiosity, so that they can start to figure out how to move forward.

We want to help empower people to make positive changes.

We wouldn’t be staying true to our core beliefs if we didn’t incorporate a physical aspect to the no shame campaign too. As part of the campaign I will be completing 5 marathons in 5 days back to back (131 miles) wearing a 22lb / 10kg weight vest.

The weighted vest symbolises the heavy burden of stigma, shame and discrimination that people often carry as a result of addiction.

So join in with us, support us to continue dong the work we do.
