INDIGENOUS GUNA PEOPLE OF PANAMA NEED YOUR HELP

Much like the rest of the world, Panama has not escaped the dire situation caused by COVID-19 and many members of the Guna community who live in the city and its surrounding areas are suffering greatly.

Panama has a large informal sector and many who work in these this sector are Indigenous People who previously resided in the comarcas (indigenous regions). They have left the comarcas as the city provides more opportunity. While many of them were able to secure work in the informal sector, their income was not enough to provide them with stability. Therefore, even before COVID-19 they struggled living in poverty. This poverty coupled with the recent measures undertaken by the Panamanian government has prevented them from working on a daily basis and aggravated an already difficult situation. They have not been able to purchase and provide essential items and food for children and other family members.

This is why we created “Ai Sabgued” which in the Guna language means “take care of our friends”. The hope of this initiative is to provide Guna families with means to meet their needs during the quarantine period, especially by purchasing basic food items. We hope that you will consider donating a small amount to help these families who desperately need help in this difficult time.

Panamá cuenta con una taza de empleos informales bastante alta, en el que muchos de estos trabajadores son de comarcas indígenas que se han trasladado a la ciudad en busca de más oportunidades laborales, Panamá no se escapa de la situación de emergencia  que ha provocado el COVID-19,afectando a muchos hermanos indígenas gunas residentes en la ciudad, que ya vivían en estado de pobreza, en el cual la mayoría de estas familias contaban con trabajos informales o sus ingresos no eran lo suficiente para salir de la mala situación económica en la que se encuentran, con las nuevas medidas tomadas por el gobierno para salvaguardar la salud y quedándonos en casa, ha agravado la situación de estas familias que han visto empeorado su entorno por el Coronavirus y no han podido suplir con las necesidades básicas de alimentación y atención adecuada para sus niños,  o sus familiares con necesidades especiales.

Es por esto que hemos creado “Ai Sabgued” que en nuestro idioma guna significa cuidemos de nuestros amigos, específicamente para brindarle a familias gunas, ayuda necesaria para suplir sus necesidades durante este tiempo de cuarentena, mediante la compra de alimentos.

Por esta razón le exhortamos a donar su granito de arena para ayudar a estas familias que tanto lo necesitan en estos tiempos difíciles.
