<div>Hola, te saluda la familia de Leonardo Rodríguez. En noviembre pasado, Leo fue diagnosticado con un schwannoma, un tumor en su nervio auditivo que tuvo que ser extraído lo antes posible para evitar daños en su cerebelo, lo que comprometería varias funciones vitales, como la respiración, la deglución y la función muscular. El sábado 26 de julio, Leo se sometió a una compleja cirugía de 8 horas que logró extirpar por completo el tumor, que había invadido el canal auditivo y parte del nervio facial. Todo parecía ir bien, no mostró complicaciones y fue enviado a su habitación.

<div>Sin embargo, nunca despertó completamente de los anestésicos, y su nariz comenzó a sangrar durante la noche. Una tomografía mostró que había un edema cerebral, una inflamación en el cerebro debido a la acumulación de líquido. Después de esto, su condición se deterioró rápidamente, lo que obligó a los médicos a trasladarlo a la unidad de cuidados intensivos. De camino a la UCI, Leo sufrió un paro cardiorrespiratorio, que cambió drásticamente los prospectos para su recuperación.

<div>Leo está siendo tratado en un hospital privado en la Ciudad de Guatemala. A diferencia de los hospitales en los Estados Unidos, recibimos una factura diaria y nos vemos obligados a pagar alrededor de 3,500 dólares todos los días para mantenerlo en la UCI. Aunque logramos recaudar una cantidad significativa para la cirugía, los costos de la UCI se han disparado mucho más allá de nuestro presupuesto inicial. Hemos acumulado un total de 15,000 dólares en costos hospitalarios en solo unos días, lo que nos ha llevado a reiniciar nuestra campaña de recaudación de fondos con la esperanza de mantenerlo estable.

<div>Hi, this is Leonardo Rodriguez’s family. Last November Leo was diagnosed with a schwannoma, a tumor that had to be removed as soon as possible in order to avoid damage to his cerebellum, which would compromise several vital functions, such as breathing, swallowing and muscle function. On Saturday July 26, Leo underwent a complex 8-hour surgery which managed to completely remove the tumor, which had invaded the ear canal and part of the facial nerve. Everything seemed to go as planned, he showed no complications and was sent to his room.

<div>However, he did not fully wake up from the anesthetics, and his nose started to bleed during the night. A CT scan showed that there was a cerebral edema, which is swelling in the brain due to fluid accumulation. After this, his condition rapidly deteriorated, which forced the doctors to move him to the intensive care unit. On the way to the ICU, Leo suffered cardiorespiratory arrest, which drastically changed the stakes for his recovery.

<div>Leo is being treated at a private hospital in Guatemala City. Unlike hospitals in the United States, we receive a bill daily and are forced to pay around $3,500 every day in order to keep him in the ICU. Although we managed to raise a significant amount towards the surgery, the costs of the ICU have skyrocketed far beyond our initial budget. We have accrued a total of $15,000 in hospital costs in only a few days, which has led us to restart our fundraising campaign in the hopes to keep him stable.

<div>This is not an easy path to travel, but we hope that your contributions will help us keep Leo at the ICU for as long as he needs to recover. Leo is an integral and cherished member of his communities in Guatemala, Venezuela and the US, far too young to be going through any of this.
