HELP US UNCOVER THE CRADLE OF ZAPOTEC CIVILIZATION!
In 2025, you helped us look beneath the surface of one of Oaxaca's most ancient Zapotec communities. What we found has opened an extraordinary new chapter. Now we need your help to take the next step—from discovery to excavation.
Last year, the ARX Project, together with archaeologists and geophysicists from Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), completed the first major geophysical investigation of the historic center of Teotitlán del Valle.
Using Ground Penetrating Radar, Electrical Resistivity Tomography and seismic methods, we were able to investigate the ancient city without disturbing the archaeological remains or the modern town built above them.
THE RESULTS EXCEEDED OUR EXPECTATIONS
Our surveys revealed that the present-day church and atrium were constructed over a much larger monumental pre-Hispanic complex, including stepped platforms and architectural remains that appear to extend the known palace complex of Belguie far beneath the modern center of the community.
Even more intriguing, the geophysical data revealed anomalies that may represent a monumental royal Zapotec tomb. A set of interconnected, chamber-like anomalies was detected approximately 2.5 meters below the present surface, while other signals at Belguie suggest that additional funerary or subterranean spaces may survive beneath the archaeological site.
Now we have an opportunity to find out what they actually are.
FROM GEOPHYSICS TO EXCAVATION: THE 2026-2027 SEASON
The next phase of Project Belguie-Xiguie will take place in two major stages.
In November 2026, our INAH–UNAM–ARX team will return to Teotitlán for a new high-resolution geophysical campaign. We will concentrate Ground Penetrating Radar and Electrical Resistivity Tomography on the most promising sectors of Belguie and the church atrium, using much denser survey grids to define buried walls, platforms, cavities, possible chambers and access points with far greater precision.
The objective is no longer simply to determine whether something exists underground. We want to understand its shape, depth, orientation and relationship to the monumental Zapotec complex before any soil is disturbed.
Then, following analysis of those results, in February–March 2027 we plan to undertake a carefully controlled archaeological excavation of the highest-potential anomaly at Belguie. The research proposal provides for an initial 5 × 5 meter excavation, potentially reaching a maximum depth of approximately 5 meters, depending on what is encountered.
This will be the decisive moment of the project: the transition from seeing the buried architecture indirectly through geophysics to actually examining its archaeological context.
COULD WE BE LOOKING AT A MONUMENTAL ZAPOTEC TOMB?
That is one of the most exciting possibilities—but it remains a hypothesis that only excavation can test.
The anomalies lie within what the research suggests was a major temple and palace complex, potentially comparable in scale and hierarchy to some of the monumental groups at nearby Mitla. The 2025 geophysical signatures are compatible in several areas with cavities or funerary chambers.
If one of these anomalies proves to be a sealed funerary structure, its location within the ceremonial and palatial heart of ancient Xiguie raises the extraordinary possibility that it could have belonged to a member of the Zapotec elite—perhaps even the tomb of an ancient ruler.
That is precisely why this next phase matters: archaeology can transform an intriguing geophysical signal into evidence.
Whatever lies beneath Belguie, the excavation has the potential to reveal an entirely new chapter in the history of Teotitlán del Valle and the development of Zapotec civilization.
AN INAH AUTHORIZED, COMMUNITY-BASED RESEARCH PROJECT
Project Belguie-Xiguie is conducted by an interdisciplinary team of specialists from INAH and UNAM, in collaboration with ARX Project, A.C., and in close coordination with the authorities and community of Teotitlán del Valle.
The INAH Council of Archaeology has formally approved the 2026 research project, and the project is being developed together with the municipal authorities and the Community Museum of Teotitlán del Valle. Community participation, conservation, scientific documentation and the local dissemination of the discoveries are fundamental parts of the project.
WE NEED APPROXIMATELY $400,000 MXN TO COMPLETE THE NEXT PHASE
$160,000 MXN will support the November geophysical campaign, including transportation of the scientific team and specialized equipment, vehicle rental, lodging, field expenses and materials needed for the GPR and electrical resistivity surveys.
A further $240,000 MXN is budgeted for the archaeological excavation and documentation phase. This includes approximately $130,000 MXN for field personnel and technical support, $70,000 for transportation, lodging and field expenses, and MXN $40,000 for excavation tools and equipment, archaeological recording materials, protective equipment, conservation-related supplies and production of the technical report.
These are the practical costs that allow archaeologists, geophysicists and local participants to work together in the field and turn scientific data into archaeological knowledge.
We have reached the moment we hoped for when this campaign began.
When we first launched this fundraiser, we asked for your help to discover what might lie beneath Teotitlán.
Now we have found the targets. The next step is to investigate them.
Your contribution—whether large or small—directly helps put the research team in the field. And if you cannot donate, sharing this campaign with others interested in archaeology, Oaxaca, Mexico and the ancient civilizations of the Americas can make an enormous difference.
Together, we have the opportunity to uncover a part of Zapotec history that has remained hidden beneath Teotitlán del Valle for centuries.
Help us open the next chapter of Project Belguie-Xiguie. Donate today and join us in the search for the lost cradle of Zapotec civilization.
