It was once said "Great things never come from comfort zones"...and I am one who rarely steps out of mine. However, In January 2015, I will be traveling to Nicaragua with several other Quinnipiac Physical Thearapy students as well as Occupational Therapy students. I am beyond excited to be leaving my comfort zone for a great cause.
Something that I have always believed strongly in is the fact that no one should be subjected to poor health care simply because of where they happened to be born. This trip is helping me turn my passion into a reality -- I am going to be able to head down to a country that is in great need of rehabilitation services.
The people of Nicaragua have suffered many hardships such as war, economic crisis and natural disaster. The average family earns just $910 annually, and 1/3 of the children never enroll in elementary school, do not attend, or drop out before reaching the sixth grade. Well here I am in my 18th year of school hoping to help make a small difference in these people's lives, while expanding my skills as a therapist.
There is much disparity in the environment, supplies, and care that these people receive within their health care system. The hospital wards are overcrowded and often there are not enough beds and/or sheets for the patients. Many times there are two or more patients sharing a portion of the bed. Individuals living with disabilities often never leave their homes due to the stigmas associated with having a disability, and the inconvenience of trying to negotiate the crowded and uneven sidewalks in their communities.
Any donation (whether monitary or well wishes) is helping me turn my dream into a reality by taking some of the financial burden off of this adventure.
