Orphanage Work in Uganda

Uganda has battled against the destruction that HIV infections have caused in so many people's lives. Health programs and educational campaigns have been implemented to try to slow down the spreading of the disease, but the struggle continues. Children are constantly being left alone because their parents are taken by this disease. These children need support to grow up in an environment where they feel they can do well and have a "family" that stands by them in difficult times.



I have spent considerable time caring for children over the years through babysitting or being around younger family members. I have watched how much the upbringing of a child can affect who they become as adults. Every child deserves a supportive childhood environment. It makes me sad that there are some places in the world where this is nearly impossible. I have had such an amazing relationship with my family since I was a child, and I feel very fortunate to have had that. I think a big part of what makes me who I am today is because of the nurturing environment in which I was raised. I want to use what I have learned to help the children in the orphanage in Bulenga. A positive figure in their life, when they may feel helpless, can hopefully make a big difference for them. I hope that my 40 hours a week can make an impact for them because I know how much it will affect me.
