We set up this page to help our father deal with medical, hospice and other bills accumilated through Moms battle with cancer. Since setting up this page Mom unfortunately lost her battle and passed away March 11th. Below is the story of her year long battle.
We started noticing Mom was acting different fall of 2016. As a strong, proud woman she never admitted to feeling any different or that there was anything wrong. By the holidays she could not hide it anymore. In a very short period of time she lost 27 pounds. Might not sound like a lot, but as a small lady this meant that she was down to 93 pounds. She was always afraid of the doctor's office but we weren't going to take no for an answer. Between December and January there were non stop doctors visits trying to figure out what was going on. January 31st, 2017 we finally received the bad news. Mom was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. The CT scan that followed the initial diagnosis revealed that it had metastasized to her lungs and liver. This was devastating news but she was ready to fight! There was no doubt in her mind that she would beat this. It was only going to be a temporary hiccup in her journey through life. Family is everything to her and she was not going to let anything get in the way of that. Mom started chemo February 16th. After several rounds she remained strong. The only reason she didn't go to work during her treatments is because she had to wear a pump for 2 days after an hour long infusion session at the cancer center. She didn't want anybody to see her pump or ask about it. So first there was FALFOX. Than they added Avastin. After the first treatment with the extra drug her colon perforated and we ended up in the Hospital.... After the infection was controlled she was sent home and started cocktail #2, FOLFIRI. As with the first treatment, this one seemed to control the growth and even shrink the tumors, but eventually would overcome the drug and get worse. We are now in September and you can see the drugs and cancer really taking a toll on Mom. But she was still determined to fight! It was now time for #3, Stivarga. Mom hated Stivarga.... out of all the drugs this one was taking chunks out of her will to fight. In late November she started radiation therapy (#4) to help ease some of the pain and discomfort as the tumor is constantly pushing against a nerve. That helped, but wasn't really the relief she hoped for.... A week after radiation she developed severe back pain and ended up having back surgery for a fractured vertebra. She just could not catch a break.... Luckily she healed quickly after surgery and she was able to be at home for Christmas, her favorite holiday. Unfortunately by the middle of January 2018, her body was not able to fight anymore. She could not take the Stivarga as she was not able to eat the required 600 calories. Without that bare minimum the drug would do more damage than it already had. We all still had hope that if not cured, we would atleast have more time together, but the final CT scan results were devastating. Her colon cancer grew in size with a secondary tumor growing in close vicinity almost completely obstructing her. The spots on her liver both grew in size, the growths in her lungs spread more than ever before and she developed two more spots in her pelvis. Mom has been in Hospice care since the 12th of February. Exactly 377 days after she was diagnosed. She fought hard every single day! She is at home and we are focusing on making her as comfortable as possible. She has good days and bad days, and sometimes even promises that she will get better... We have been by Mom's side every step of the way and did everything possible to help and support her throughout her battle. As the drugs and cancer took a toll on her this journey has also taken a toll on our family. We are kindly asking for donations to assist with doctor, oncologist, hospital, surgery, hospice and other expenses we have accumulated during these tough times. People are always asking if there is anything they can do to help. Spreading Moms story and donating to our cause through this page would be the biggest help that our family could ask for.
