Hiya, I'm Anya and I am 16 years old. My school has offered me the chance to go to Madagascar in July of 2020 (just after I sit my GCSEs). I have been selected as 1 of 16 successful applicants to go on the expedition and I just can't wait! The company taking us, Operation Wallacea, offer the chance of a life time to schools & Universities across the world with an interest in land science to join them as volunteers. For the two weeks I am out in Madagascar, I will spend the first week in the dry forest where I will collect important data about the land and the species for them to use to help educate the local and wider community as to why and how we should be protecting this land and how to live in harmony with all species.
The second week I will be spending time at a marine base called Nosy Be. I will be Scuba diving into the crystal clear waters and using advanced technology to map the ocean floor. I will be completing the Indian Ocean Ecology Course while on the island. As part of the research I will be counting various species of marine life and coral; this will help us understand how the marine life is effected by changes in climate and atmosphere caused by humans.
This expedition is designed to help us have a better understanding of the less developed countries and how the people live. We will be helping the scientists and the local people living off the land through our research, but also gaining amazing memories and experiences. Whilst also broadening our education, we will be volunteering at local schools and sitting lectures about the land and why it is so important.
As with all things, this expedition will cost me a large amount of money, I have chosen to try and fundraise the full cost of the expedition- £3600. To do so, I will complete various sponsored events and also set up some events in order to raise the money (I have already done the Yorkshire 3 peaks in under 12 hours). I am greatly appreciative of any donations I receive and any advice/ideas on how to raise the money is amazing. I'm so thankful for all your help.
