Antwahn's Osteosarcoma Battle

Recent Update – April 2018
Since Antwahn’s diagnosis on October 13th, 2017, he underwent a more recent CT scan in February of this year prior to the start of the management of cancer.

The scan revealed that the sarcoma has metastasized and formed legions on his lungs which the doctors advised needed to receive more immediate treatment.
His first confinement at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital here in Barbados started on February 19th, 2018 and Antwahn is currently hospitalized, on his third conferment to undergoing chemotherapy.

Another three months of chemotherapy is required before bone salvage surgery could be started.
Following this confinement, doctors will review his progress and determine the next course of treatment.

Over the last three months, medical expenses have been in excess of Bds$30,000.00 and this is expected to increase as the management of the sarcoma progresses.

The GoFundMe Campaign is being managed by the appointed Trustee of the Fund, Phillip Eversley-Bispham who resides in the UK. Phillip’s responsibility is to receive the funds on Antwahn’s behalf and thereafter, make transfers to the local Barbados account that has been set up.

Antwahn remains very frail but continues to be positive and we have seen remarkable progress. We pray that as the treatment continues, we see progressive improvement and reduction in the size of the tumor.




Antwahn is shy, but happy and is a very loving teenager living in Barbados.

As a younger child he had a difficult development because of the rate at which he grasped concepts at school and was labelled a “slow learner”. He was also diagnosed with ADHD.

In his pre-teen years Antwahn was sad and dejected, he found school life extremely difficult due to bullying. It also happened in his village with the neighbourhood children and this proved to be a very traumatic experience for him, to the point where he exhibited signs of depression and entertained thoughts of suicide.
On leaving primary level, Antwahn was placed at a school called The Schoolhouse For Special Needs, which has a great team of teachers who catered for children with his learning capacity. This was the beginning of a bright future for him and has really changed the course of his life.

He has flourished into a remarkable teenager and we have witnessed his talents emerge over time. At this school, Antwahn is well loved by peers and the teaching staff.

He loves all things mechanical and is able to fix model kits despite he has never had training in mechanics. He can amazingly diagnose problems with cars and other vehicles and also loves to paint and draw.




At age 17, Antwahn was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma of the distal femur on Oct 13th 2017. He was perfectly healthy until July 2017 when he started to complain of what we thought was simply pain in the right knee. However, the pain was consistent and became more intense and especially excruciating at night.

During the period July to October, Antwahn saw five different doctors who gave varying diagnoses but we are grateful that we now know the cause of his pain and can seek to help him.

For us the fight is now on to stop this disease from ravishing his little body. To do this we need your help. This cancer is aggressive and we need to act fast.

What we are up against.....

Osteosarcoma is a type of cancer that produces
immature bone and is the most common type of
cancer that arises in bones, most often found around
the knee. Research reveals that most people diagnosed with osteosarcoma are under the age of 25 and it is thought to occur more often in males than females.

There are varying ranges of Osteosarcomas but Antwahn has a high grade aggressive tumor that requires a reciprocal aggressive treatment regimen. It is because of the aggressive nature of this high grade tumor that the best course of treatment recommended is for him to be cared for in a cancer centre, overseen by an expert sarcoma team with the ready resources to provide specialized and responsive care.



What is required to treat this cancer?

Antwahn will require 11 weeks of chemo before Bone Salvage Surgery can be undertaken. In addition, 18 more weeks of chemo will be required after Surgery; a total of 29 weeks of chemo therapy.

Tonia, Antwahn’s mother, would have to be away from work for 6 months to support and care for him throughout the process. The medical costs alone are unmanageable on her own and even with the support of her relatives, the living expenses have become too much to bear.

We know a positive outlook will help the healing process and we are giving it our very best to keep Antwahn in his current positive state of mind. He uses his time during this period of his illness to learn airbrushing and sketch since he cannot attend school.
