We are Anthorna Gallery Philadelphia, a studio-show space cultivated to honor marginalized voices, safe sanctuary, & the joy of artistic solidarity. Our goal is to grow the beautiful West Philly haven into a greater platform, for folks of all backgrounds to be further included in the center. The vision is orienting our location to be more accessible, & more equipped to become a constant pillar for our community at large.
UPDATE : As of November 2nd, 2019, we received unanticipated news that the building we occupy is under legal conflict with the city, due to zoning. Our business is not in danger, but have since had to cease events for the time being. Our mission is still very much alive, though our focus for now is to reestablish our space in 2020, at full swing completing our colorful community!
This is a bit of a blessing in disguise. After already having begun crowdfunding, we are now far more prepared to upgrade our location in this transition period. Your help means we can come back bigger & better than ever! Read more on what's happening HERE.
On May 14th, 2018, we opened our space with a music & art benefit for Prophecy Canvas x Puerto Rico; intending to set the tone of support for those struggling in situations with minimal resources. We've discovered that Anthorna has since become a hearth & home for charity, development, & creativity. From that point on, we proceeded to also support the Yellowhammer Fund , the Florence Project , Illumination Nonprofit , & more through our creative network. On a daily basis, we are constantly holding space for diverse crowds; giving a platform for women, queer/trans folk, & people of color to express themselves in an inclusive setting.
Primarily, we are operated by local creators. Namely:
Eeden Shale | Founder & Creative Director
Mark Mooradian | Booking Agent & Manager
Kiera Lange | Outreach Coordinator
Our reasoning for running Anthorna with the values we do, is a direct response to contributors in arts & music cultures backing misogynistic, racist, biased, or otherwise problematic agendas. We believe that integrity is what truly weaves a community together, that authenticity means quality. The notion of uplifting survivors & otherwise marginalized folks in the name of art, is what makes the greatest difference in our world, across the board.
This being said, the stance we have on activism & artistry goes two ways. It is both an emancipation of creative liberty through independent, advocacy-based, corporation-free means; while allowing our extra energy to go towards projects that give back.
In the past several months, we have reached a peak in our current space where the platform & resources we wish to offer reach beyond our capacity. This is a complete blessing, & we are following the call to expand! Contributing to Anthorna's growth through this campaign means we can expand to size for what we are truly capable of bringing forth in creative healing, community support, & changing the lives of those who become part of our network.
Who this benefits include neighborhood kids, who will be able to receive accessible art programs. Touring & local acts, who will be able to find themselves immersed in an environment that is even more so equipped to facilitate sustenance for them. Artists near & far, with the opportunity to now be a part of a further developed studio-show space with concentration on their success, their inclusion. It also will allow us additional means to invest in various forms of outreach & charity, opening up endless doors towards how the merging of art & activism will have an immensely positive impact on such.
When Anthorna meets our goal, fund distribution will go towards the location upgrade, more resources for the creative community, & securing our sound legal continuation! We intend to increase the space capacity, as well as the offerings we can bring to the table. What this means, is our business becoming even more sustainable.
$12,000 of our funds raised will go towards the space's transition - we will become wheelchair accessible, be better physically oriented for all-ages inclusivity, assured proper zoning & able to hold more space for additional growth!
$5,000 will go towards funding an art program: supplies & workshop development!
$5,000 will go towards stocking our venue with audio gear for the support of our audio artists!
$3,000 will be delegated to create a small apothecary in our finished space, helping to naturally heal ailments & manage stress!
After 11/2/19, we're re-delegated the allotments of funds raised to greater sustain the location's transition. If you would like to read up more on the why's & how's of the shift, please click HERE .
