Global Citizen Year in India

Donation protected
My name is Anthony Romain, and I am a high school senior at Eagle Academy for Young Men in Brooklyn, New York. My goal in life is to change lives in the field of therapy, whether that be physical or occupational. Before I go to college I will be taking a gap year to do an apprenticeship in India through Global Citizen Year (GCY) as a member of the 2018-2019 fellow cohort. I will be leaving to go to India on August 26th, 2018 and will be back in the U.S on April 7th, 2019.

I believe that this gap year will be a milestone in achieving my life’s goals and be pivotal in helping me grow and into a mature individual. Growing up in NYC, I got to experience many different cultures, but was never actually able to visit those exotic places, besides Jamaica and Trinidad to see family. I have always wanted to travel the world and learn more about other cultures, and this year in India will be essential to that.

I am fortunate enough to have the chance to be fully immersed in a totally different culture,  interacting with different people in a new environment. I will be living how they live, following their customs, eating the foods they eat (with new flavors), and listening to different music, all in an unfamiliar environment. I expect to learn new things and to keep an open mind as I navigate through the Indian culture. I also want to help!

From attendance issues to the quality of teaching, India’s education system is in a crisis. Teach for India (TFI) is a program that is pushing to change the education statistics in India. I have learned that:

- 76% of students in India do not make it to higher education
- 40% of students in standard 3 (elementary school - US 4th grade) cannot recognize numbers up to 100
- 52% of students in standard 5 (US 6th grade) cannot read at a 3rd-grade level

During my gap year in India, I will be participating in the TFI program as a teacher’s assistant, helping to change these statistics.

I have been granted a scholarship worth 31,500 to attend this program. The cost, however, is not completely covered by my scholarship. In addition to raising $2,500 towards the Fellow Scholarship Fund (money for prospective students to have the same opportunity as me). While my family will help me with basic living allowances, I am still in need of $1,000 to cover the tuition cost. If you could please find it in your heart to donate, I would greatly appreciate it. No amount is too small. Thank you.

Please feel free to research my program.
