ANTHONY PAULE LEUKEMIA FUND

HELLO FRIENDS,

Blues aficionado and DJ (@KPOO) NOEL HAYES reached out to me in regards to our mutual friend (accomplished blues guitarist and bandleader based in California) ANTHONY PAULE.

Anthony was recently diagnosed with a rare form of Leukemia called…HAIRY CELL LEUKEMIA.

Anthony had been experiencing some fatigue, and his condition was discovered during a well check visit earlier this year with his doctor when his blood tests revealed a potential issue.

After further review…Anthony was diagnosed with HAIRY CELL LEUKEMIA.

The full blood count test will often show anemia (low red blood cell count that can predispose to fatigue), low white blood cell count (that can predispose to infection), and a low platelet count (that can predispose to bleeding).

From the Hairy Cell Leukemia Foundation…

WHAT IS HAIRY CELL LEUKEMIA?

Hairy cell leukemia is a chronic and rare form of adult leukemia. It is estimated that approximately 2 % of all adult patients with leukemia have this form of disease. While the cause of this malignancy is not known, the origin of the malignant cell is thought to develop from the memory B cell compartment. These malignant cells infiltrate the bone marrow, the spleen, and the liver from the time of diagnosis. While lymph nodes in the abdomen may be involved, lymph nodes are rarely enlarged on physical examination.

Hairy cell leukemia is usually gradual in onset. Patients present with fatigue, increased susceptibility to infection, and enlargement of the spleen. The malignant hairy cells in the bone marrow compromise the usual production of normal red cells, white blood cells, and platelets that are manufactured in the bone marrow.

There are approximately 1,000 new cases of hairy cell leukemia discovered every year in the United States. There is an unexplained larger number of men than women afflicted with this leukemia. Hairy cell leukemia is treatable, but not curable. While the cause is not known, the treatment is usually very effective in helping patients lead a normal life.

Anthony recently underwent a series of chemotherapy treatments (which compromised his immune system / he had already planned to self-isolate even prior to our “STAY AT HOME” mandate here in California.) He is now embarking on a series of (non chemo) drug infusions, to be administered over the next eight weeks…after which, his doctor will perform another bone marrow biopsy to assess his progress.

THE GOOD NEWS: Anthony and his wife (Christine Vitale) are encouraged by his doctor’s confidence that with proper timely treatment…Anthony will hopefully enjoy a prolonged period of remission at some point.

THE BAD NEWS: While Anthony has health insurance…the mounting OUT OF POCKET COSTS for the lab tests, treatments, doctor visits and oral medications are already nearing $15K.

We realize that this is a challenging time for all of us…and not an easy time to ask for help for a friend.

Truth be told…Anthony really didn’t want anyone to know…much less ask for help. That’s why Noel (who is a dear friend of Anthony and Christine) had to work hard to convince him to let us organize this Go Fund Me Campaign. Anthony Paule is a hardworking and prolific bandleader who employs many musicians and books as many shows as possible (locally as well as festivals around the world including the Porretta Soul Festival where the Anthony Paule Soul Orchestra serves as the house band annually).

Any help that friends, family and our great big beautiful music community can offer…would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Thank you,
Tina Abbaszadeh (& Noel Hayes)
