Anthony J. "Snake" Mitravich, Jr. died on September 16, 2017 at the age of 68 due to Lung Cancer. He enlisted in the United States Army in October 1967. He served two tours in Vietnam where he received the Purple Heart, Bronze star, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
He loved his family, friends and country above everything else. He suffered from severe and untreated PTSD after Vietnam, but like many veterans he worked a myriad of menial jobs trying to make ends meet, rather than seek help.
Anyone who knew him, knew what a kind and generous person he was. He would give his last dollar or the shirt off his back to help someone else. He looked after and took care of so many of the neighbor kids while I was growing up. He always had a hot meal, good advice and/or a place to stay if things were rough at any of my friend’s houses.
He never wanted to ask for help himself, but when he finally couldn’t take care of himself anymore we convinced him to apply to the VA for benefits. He suffered from PTSD as a result of his time in Vietnam and was on full disability from the VA. Because of the rules for VA benefits we have to return his entire check for September even though he died halfway through the month.
His medical issues made getting life insurance too expensive to afford.
November 2016 he was diagnosed with stage 1 lung cancer and shortly after he was diagnosed with stage 2 colon cancer. In January 2017 he had surgery to remove the colon cancer. In February he was hospitalized with Pneumonia and kidney failure. While recovering, a blockage was discovered in both of his legs. In March, he had a full bypass on his right leg to return circulation. In April, he had surgery in his right lung removing the top lobe where the cancer was located. Successful, the doctors were confident they had gotten all of the cancer. Through all of these hardships, he never stopped smiling, and felt so blessed to be surrounded by family and friends during each of his recoveries.
In July, when we discovered that his lung cancer had returned and that it was very aggressive and likely to be fatal we filled out a claim form with the VA for Agent Orange related illness. They also discovered two lesions on his skull that were also cancerous. He started hospice care in August 2017.
The cancer was more aggressive that we realized and he passed before the claim could be processed. We have submitted a claim after the fact, but we have no idea at this point whether the VA will provide any benefits for his widow, Melinda Mitravich.
