Antarctica Research Study Abroad

Donation protected
Hello,

My name is Jazz Overholt and I am a senior at Michigan State University who is about to embark on a journey that will shape the rest of my life. Over winter break, I will be studying abroad through a very competitive program to Antarctica and Argentina to engage in scientific research. I will join a sliver of the world’s population to study the wildlife that thrives in this remote region of the world. My major is Sustainable Parks, Recreation, and Tourism  with a minor in Anthropology. My research while abroad will focus on how the tourism industry impacts the environment in the Antarctic Peninsula and how I predict the future of the Antarctica Tourism Industry to expand. This study abroad will be the capstone of my senior year and will heavily influence the direction I will choose to take post graduation. Under the guidance of two empowering female scientists, Jennifer Owen and Mary Bremigan, I will gain knowledge about the wildlife that surrounds us below, on, and above the sea ice. This knowledge is vital for me to excel in the sustainable tourism industry. After my sophomore year of college, I was accepted to be an intern at WANT Expeditions, a small-group orientated tour operating company that takes guests to see rare and endangered wildlife across the world. For the past two summers, I applied knowledge I gained from the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources to grasp what it means to be a leader in sustainability in the tourism industry through my hands on experience at WANT Expeditions. WANT Expeditions chose me to travel to India to attend a three day long conference on behalf of the company in order to develop industry specific skills, while being the sole international promoter of the company. Through this travel experience I gained professional and personal skills that opened my eyes to the business side of this industry. I chose to study abroad in Argentina and Antarctica because I need to acquire a more in depth understanding of wildlife biology in order to become a fully-rounded expert in wildlife tourism. I have already met with professors who have dedicated their lives understanding Tourism Sector, in order to create questions that will be the backbone to my research abroad. I am a leader who grasps onto every opportunity given in order to expand my knowledge and find my passions. To me, education is the key to unlocking the answers of the world’s major problems; while experience is the opportunity needed to apply my education and change the world.

Please consider donating to my Study Abroad that will take place in a month and a half. I will be abroad from December 15th, 2018 - January 6th, 2019. Any donation helps and is much appreciated! I spent 65 hours a week working over the summer to save up for my Study Abroad and I currently am working while in school to save money. I have also applied to many Study Abroad scholarships through the MSU's Agriculture and Natural Resource College. I have a 3.6 GPA and I have been on the Dean's List every semester while attending Florida Atlantic University and Michigan State University. I take my education extremely seriously and I hope to graduate with as little debt as possible. Thank you for considering donating.

During my trip I will be video blogging and writing each day to record my experience. I will share all of my photos, videos, and writing once I return. Stay tuned through my social media accounts in the next couple of months to learn about my study abroad!
