Annika's Medical Mission to Haiti

Hello!
I need your help. I'm raising money to go on a university-level medical mission trip to Haiti this June. I'm pursuing this opportunity for a number of reasons.
In anticipation of becoming a nurse, I’ve made a point of volunteering my time to clinical related programs. These include providing administrative support to Anne Arundel Medical Center, Hospice of the Chesapeake, and organizing a blood drive.
Regarding Haiti, while I understand this Caribbean island possesses natural beauty, as you most likely know, the country faces many public health issues from infrastructural weaknesses and other social issues. Deficient sanitation systems, poor nutrition, and inadequate health services have pushed Haiti to the bottom of the World Bank’s rankings of health indicators. For better or worse, this locale is in desperate need of people that can help make a difference.
I'll be assisting local doctors provide pro bono consultations. Specifically, I'll be increasing the overall efficiency of these consultations by helping record data for pulse, blood pressure, weight and various other assessments. Assisting these medical practitioners will ensure that more patients’ needs can be taken care of in a short period of time.
In addition, I'll be challenged to think critically about how to solve health crises in both rural and urban communities. This includes:
- Building a new school, with the double benefit of increasing locations to learn as well as a safe and permanent community gathering space.
- Spending time with an NGO - Medicines and Foods for Kids. We’ll visit their headquarters and learn about the work they're doing to treat child malnutrition.
- Helping a local organization upgrade the water system at a school serving up to 500 students.
