Annie Wickett Stroke Recovery Fund

Donation protected
Many of you know Annie Wickett from our greater Frederick area soccer community. She has suffered a major medical emergency, and her family needs your help!

Annie recently went to Cluj, Romania to play professional UEFA Women’s Champions League soccer for Olimpia Cluj. While she was at training camp, she became very ill. She suffered a significant stroke (Brain Stem Stroke) after returning to her room following a training camp session on July 12th, 2018, just a week after arriving in the country -- two days before her 25th birthday. Her roommate and coaches called for an ambulance and she was taken to the local hospital, and she was then transported by helicopter to a specialist hospital about 100 miles away. A surgical procedure was required to remove a blood clot from her brain stem. She was in critical condition, and is now recovering in the neurological intensive care unit there. She was joined by her mother and father after an 18 hour flight / drive. There is hope and expectation that she will fully recover, but she and her family will need to spend a month (or more) in Romania before she will be able to return to the United States. Once home, the rehabilitation process may last an unknown extended period of time.

Annie had recently graduated from the University of Connecticut, and has been employed by the ALDI grocery warehouse in Frederick, MD for the last 5 years. She started playing soccer when she was 6 years old, and she has been continually driven to be the best she can be--she loves to play the game. Over her soccer career, she has played for teams at the rec, club (Bethesda Riptide), high school (Tuscarora High School), and college levels (D1 UConn Huskies and Eastern Kentucky University), and has been affiliated with highly visible and competitive clubs including the Washington Spirit and Boston Breakers reserves teams, and the DC United Women. Her dream was always to play professional soccer, and she had achieved that dream.

For those of you who know Annie, you know she is a fighter. She has a very strong will, and if anyone can fully recover from this, she can. But we will need to take one day at a time. We are appealing to our amazing soccer community (and beyond) to come together and raise much-needed emergency funds to help Annie and her family with significant medical costs, travel costs, lost wages, and general support through this difficult time. All contributions will go directly to the family, and any amount is sincerely appreciated.
