In light of the recent uptick in hate crimes in the United States, I took my children to our local library to check out Anne Frank: The Diary of A Young Girl. This book changed my life, and I hoped my kids could understand the impact of hate, the importance of bravery and love, and how we are watching history repeat itself. I wanted them to read Anne's words, and to also believe that, "in spite of everything" [that is happening], "people are good at heart."
Unfortunately, there were no available copies at our branch. When I searched for all copies available in our system of 28 libraries, I found 4 copies total and they were all checked out!
If knowledge is power, and power is access, then we must ensure all American citizens have access to knowledge.
With this GoFundMe, I seek to ensure every library in America owns its own copy of Anne Frank: The Diary of A Young Girl.
The first goal of $5,000 purchased approximately 165 hard-backed copies ($20-25 + shipping), and that's a great start!
I've extended to goal to $7500!
The Unites States is home to about 119,500 libraries, so we have some work to do.
We're off to a great start!
Your $30 gift will provide one hard-backed, library-bound copy of Anne Frank: The Diary of A Young Girl to an American library with an acknowledgement of your gift.
We are targeting cities based on the Southern Poverty Law Center's Hate Map.
Phase 1 will focus on cities with Neo-Nazi and Holocaust denier groups. We have enough money raised so far to send a book to a library in each city! However, we want to ensure that every library in the systems that serve those cities each have a copy.
Phase 2 will focus on cities with anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant hate groups.
Phase 3 will focus on cities with White Nationalist and Skinhead groups.
We have so much to do, but we're doing it! We're making a dent!
