Kim Baugh Rideout died on November 5, 2014.  She was only 51 years old. She was a single mom with two teenage kids.  As her stepbrother said at her funeral, she built a village to support her as she worked hard to raise a good family. Now it’s time for her village (and the village’s friends) to show what we are made of.  Kim (or Kimmy, as we villagers called her) had one single goal in her life…to be a good mom and have a happy home.  And, she achieved it.

When she found herself divorced with an infant and a toddler, she decided it would not interfere with that goal. She made the changes necessary to keep her family on track. For instance, although she was a successful and very effective social worker, she knew that job would not provide the life she wanted her kids to have.

She didn’t desire extravagance, just stability and comfort. So, she landed a better job that  would keep her family moving forward.  When she was the byproduct of downsizing in her company, she didn’t fret, she simply regrouped and found another job.  As a result of her tenacity, compassion and determination Kim’s life, and the life of her kids, was good.  Then, she died. Unexpectedly. Shockingly. Cancer. She didn’t know it was that bad. And the village wept.

The reality is that Kim’s kids will be fine.  They will live with their grandmother who loves and cherishes them. They will have a roof over their heads and food to eat. She will give them all she can. But we want them to have more than that.  Not an extravagant life but a life that is comfortable and easy…the life that Kim wanted them to have with educational opportunities, healthy social activities and robust community involvement.

They will never have their mother back, but they can feel her love through the warm contributions of her village. So village, give. Whether you can be wildly or mildly generous, we just ask that you contribute something. Now is the time for the village to rally. Kim would thank you with a big smile and a hug. And her children will be forever grateful.
