Ankle Surgery for Frisky Whiskey!

It was a typical July evening in the middle of nowhere. Yet again I found myself in the desert town of Gerlach, Nevada at the start of another long work season with the Black Rock City Department of Public Works, building the infrastructure for the Burning Man festival. A couple of weeks into my tenure there, as we were preparing to move our operations from town to the playa, my adorable dogfriend Gozer was in need of his nightly walk behind the beautiful Gerlach Estates trailer park. And lo, during our stroll, the cutest Destructor of Worlds and Ankles let loose his raw power and my joint was no match - my bone parts were fractured in three places and two ligaments were torn. Since it was after hours and I was off Burning Man property, two enormous strikes against me being able to file a workers' comp claim, I will not receive any help from my seasonal employer.

Luckily! I have COBRA! Unluckily - COBRA is still hella 'spensive. I am already on the hook for all of the money that I earned this summer, and there is no end to my co-pays and premiums in sight - I've already had my surgery and the bills have been piling ever since. This week, I finally made an appointment to have my cast removed after five weeks of lugging it about, but that means seeing a new doc in my home base of Oakland as opposed to the providers I've been seeing in Reno throughout this ordeal. New patient fees are NUTSO y'all! And so - I've been told by many people that it's time I sucked it up and asked for help from my community, which is where we find ourselves now.

This fundraiser will go purely toward my medical recovery and the attendant expenses. Whatever I raise will be used for insurance co-pays, monthly fees, and premiums; medical acupuncture for my returned neuropathy; body work for the referred pain in the rest of my muscles due to compensating for my lack of leg with my other parts; and sports medicine therapy so that I can still ride a bike and have quality of life - not just learn to walk again.

Additionally, as a result of my injury I had to leave most of my worldly possessions in Gerlach and now must find a way to retrieve them, so a small portion of this fundraiser will go toward paying for the logistics of wrapping up my affairs in Nevada and returning the collateral of my life to Oakland so that I can spend the winter primarily concentrating on my recovery. I will also be pursuing remote employment (send me leads if you've got 'em!) which means that none of the money raised in this fundraiser will need to go toward daily living expenses.

I have spent the last 6 years working toward rebuilding my credit and saving money so that I could live independently and make real choices for myself - set up a nice life that wouldn't necessitate asking for help - and one moment changed all of that. I need help extricating myself from this spiral. I simply can't do this alone. If you've got a little extra dough and can find it in your heart, I would appreciate any contribution you could make. Thank you, thank you, thank you friends.
