Anika's Costa Rica Exchange

Donation protected
Friends and Family,

On June 17, 2017, I will be traveling from Oregon to Costa Rica with the Partners of the Americas exchange program. The purpose of the program is to promote international understanding and friendship. They also strive to broaden education on different cultures while improving the Spanish skills  the students that travel. This program costs $2,300 per student plus $400-500 for spending while in Costa Rica. Additional money is also needed for passports, host family gifts and miscellaneous travel costs.

Partners of the Americas is a successful program started by president John F. Kennedy in 1964 with a goal to increase the knowledge of students on other countries and form friendships that last forever. Their mission is to work together as citizen volunteers to mutually improve and enrich lives and communities. Past participants claimed it was the best experience of their lives and greatly improved their Spanish skills.

I will spend two months in Costa Rica with host families while attending school with my host brother or sister, and exploring the culture and nature of the country. One month is spent in a city (most likely San Jose) then I will switch families to spend another month in a rural town in order to experience both lifestyles.

I want to participate for many reasons. First, travel is my passion. My family spent two years living in a motorhome and traveling the United States. It was an amazing experience and definitely shaped me to be the person I am. I have traveled to so many different and amazing places, but have never been out of the country. Secondly, I love language and have been studying Spanish for the past four years, I also recently started learning American Sign Language. Spanish is by far my favorite part of the school day. It comes easily to me, but I don’t believe I will be able to fully grasp the language until I truly experience and speak it daily. Lastly, in college I want to study Cultural Anthropology, the study of human societies and cultures and their development. I plan to take photography and journalism classes as well. When I finish school, I plan to travel the world, and document cultures for others to see. Being able to study in Costa Rica would be an amazing way to do what I love with my life.

The two month exchange fee, spending expenses, plus passport and immunization costs will most likely come to a total of about $3,000 dollars. In order to travel with the program I will need financial assistance. Any contributions are appreciated, and would help me reach my goal. Please consider helping me on my journey!

Thank you in advance.
Sincerely,
