Dear Friends and Family,
Today my brother and his wife received news no parent should have to hear. After noticing their daughter was pale and bruising easily, they took her to their doctor. Their 12 year old daughter was diagnosed with Leukemia.
Angelina was immediately admitted to Hasbro Children's Hospital, and will undergo surgery for a chemo port to be inserted into her chest. She will start chemo right away. Angelina will have to be at Hasbro for a minimum of one month. This is called the 'induction phase' where aggressive chemo is performed to kill as much of the leukemia cells as possible so her bone marrow can start to produce healthy cells once again. If all goes well, Angelina can come home after one month and will visit the hospital once a week for additional chemo treatments. This is what they refer to as the 'consolidation phase', and usually lasts 4-6 months. Finally, if all continues to go well, she will proceed into the maintenance phase of chemo treatments for an additional 2-3 years.
I am asking for your help so that Michael and Mayra can take time from their jobs and be by Angelina's side at the hospital during this initial phase, as you can imagine how frightened she is. Mike and Mayra will be struggling enough emotionally, if I can help ease their financial struggles, I know it will help them a lot to focus on what's most important! It is my hope and prayer that through family and friends, we can help them navigate through this difficult time so they can be there for Angelina. Her first words to her Dad upon hearing her diagnosis were, "Am I going to die?" I can't imagine what it felt like to hear their little girl say those words!
Please keep Angelina in your prayers! She is one tenacious little girl and I know through our prayers and her resilience, she is going to fight this!
