ANGELA SPERRY PETITO, THE WOMAN BEHIND THE MAN
Coach Fred Petito is probably most well-known in the Omaha sports circles, Millard Public and Omaha Catholic School systems as football coach and teacher. Many people may not know that he actually started his varsity football career at Omaha Cathedral in 1980. He later moved to Millard North where he even coached basketball in addition to football. As head football coach, he cemented his legacy by amassing 274 wins and five state championships for the Millard North Mustang Brotherhood. He was named the Alum of the Year by Hastings College in 2004, and both the Omaha World Herald and Lincoln Journal Star named him coach of the year in 2011. A staggering number of his players have pursued playing at all collegiate levels, and Todd Doxzon, Seth Olsen, Jeff Tarpinian, Eric Crouch and Pat Tyrance are a few who have played in the NFL. His impact is also reflected in former players such as Mark Chavez, Tyler Cotton, and Adam Shada who have returned to support his legacy.
The work that Coach Petito does on the field with these young men is impressive, but what is even more impressive is what he does off the field. Not only does he spend countless hours mentoring young men and their families through the college recruiting process, but he even takes the time to assist players from other schools in the metro area through the process. He truly cares about our community. High school can be a tough time for so many students, and Coach Petito is not one to turn away when he sees any youth in need of guidance to get back on track. His quiet leadership and countless hours spent with our youth and their families has an impact that cannot be measured. Every young man is treated as family, the brotherhood is real!
We as a community have benefitted from Coach Petito’s passion and dedication - the countless hours he gives on and off the field. None of this would have be possible without the strength, compassion and support of his beloved wife, Angela, and their five children. For decades, Angela lived a full life as a wife, mother, grandmother and working woman, but she also struggled with a chronic illness which struck a devastating blow to the family several months ago. Not only did they battle her illness but Coach and Angela had to use their last months together fighting with the insurance companies to get her the best and proper care she most desperately needed. Tragically, this was one fight they could not win. After exhausting all resources to pay for Angela’s care, they lost to the insurance company and Angela was sent home. Sadly, Angela Sperry Petito passed away on June 3, 2017. The Petito family has been left to put the pieces back together.
We invite all Millard North families, the Omaha community and beyond to help honor the legacy of Angela Sperry Petito. If you are a current or former player, a student, parent, alumnus or sports fan, this is an opportunity for you to give back. Your financial contribution today will help the Petito family put the insurance nightmare behind them so they can spend their time honoring the legacy of, Angela, beloved wife, mother and grandmother.
