On Sunday, January 14, 2018, my little sister Angel was rushed to the hospital. She had been her usual self that morning. Angel was singing, talking, laughing and being a normal 4 year old child. As she was laying on the sofa and playing on her mom’s phone she started crying. Her mother came out to check on her and noticed that she was sweating and turning her head into her unicorn stuffed animal. Her parents thought that maybe she was just sick. Her father gave her some children’s ibuprofen syrup, which she than said “mmm yummy!” After taking it, Angel asked to be taken to bed where she can sleep because she was feeling tired. Her father brought her into the bedroom. He then laid her down to bed and she suddenly curled her head into the pillow like a snake, he described. At that moment he new something wasn’t right. He quickly brought her back out to the living room and onto the sofa. He could start to feel her slipping away and it terrified him. He called out her name, “Angel, Angel! Wake up!” He tried shaking her to wake her up, but still nothing. He quickly started giving her C.P.R. With every breath and compression given, her eyes would open but staring into space and slowly shutting again. He continued giving her C.P.R. Her mother rubbed Vick’s around her nose and neck in hopes it would wake her up, as her brothers called 911. Angel was not responding to any pain and losing oxygen quickly. The ambulance arrived within minutes and started resuscitation. The paramedics brought her into the ambulance and rushed her to the hospital nearby.After a few CT scans the doctor told her parents that there looks to be a mass the size of a clementine or ping pong ball in the left side of her brain. The next step would be to transfer her to a children’s hospital nearby as they are not fully equipped with the proper resources for this type of situation. She was then taken to the children’s hospital 45 minutes away as the closest children’s hospital was full. The doctors were all very surprised that a child her age with that size of a tumor was functioning perfectly normal with no signs of symptoms. Luckily, the bleeding around her tumor had stopped and allowed them to prep her for an MRI and get a closer look before getting her into surgery.
On Monday, January 15, 2018 Angel was going into surgery. The neurosurgeon was able to take out her tumor, but unfortunately she had suffered multiple strokes. The medical staff were unable to tell if it happened before or after surgery. From here on, Angel was sedated and on pain meds. The doctors said that Angel had a 50/50 chance of recovery. She was in a coma now. As the days went by everyone was still very hopeful, but also knew it was time for the kids to see their Angel.
On Thursday, January 18, 2018 the children were able to visit Angel. On that day tears fell down her face for the very first time. It gave everyone hope that maybe she actually heard the voices in the room and was trying to find her way back.
On Friday, January 19, 2018 Angel was given her first Brain Stem assessment to check her reflexes. She did not respond to any of the tests given. Angel was to be given one more assessment 12 hours after her first one and no later than 24 hours.
On Saturday, January 20, 2018 around 12:30pm after her second assessment, Angel had passed.
This has been a very extreme and untimely situation for everyone. We didn't get our chance to say our good byes nor get the chance to see our little Angel grow up to be the woman she were to be. With this great loss, we sincerely thank each and everyone in advance for your monetary donations, love and support to help us send her off in the best way possible. Rest In Peace our little Angel.
