Angel Evie's Companion/Therapy Dog

My name is Cathie Matzinger, I am a Speech Pathologist in Butte County. I have the privilege of working with children from birth to three years of age. I have a very special student named Evelyn (Evie) who has a rare neuro genetic disorder called Angelman Syndrome. At this point in her life Evie is non-verbal, suffers from difficult to control seizures, and scoliosis which may end her up in a wheelchair. The most difficult symptom that her dedicated parents have to deal with (along with the seizures) is Evie does not seem to need much sleep. (A symptom of Angelman syndrome) Oh my! Sleep deprivation is so challenging.
To make a long story shorter: I have a beautiful friend who expertly raises intelligent and sweet Golden Retrievers. Her name is Jo Danehy. Jo is a retired nurse who has worked with babies in her tenure in the medical field. When I asked her about a companion/therapy dog for Evie - she knew what would be needed. We both knew it would take a special dog for this special lady.
Jo had that special dog. Her name is Sitara and she is a puppy right now. Jo has agreed to keep Sitara until she is ready to love and share the responsibility of Evie. The money will be used to support Jo, Sitara, and Evie in this endever as it takes lots of time and dedication to raise a dog to be a responsible citizen - able to accompany Evie and either parent to medical appointments, pre-school, and or in the community at large.
Evie and her family are very important to me. There are children who come into our lives and touch our hearts. Evie is one such child. However, its not just her - I am touched by her parents Bobbi and Mike too. Their commitment, love, generousity, and indeed the education they have had to give themselves through this journey humbles me.
