"And So I Did"

“She believed she could so she did.”
It’s a simple mantra that many have heard of, and one that I, as a young woman, have often taken for granted. I am so incredibly blessed. For every person that’s believed in me when I didn’t in myself and for every opportunity that has given me a rich life full of knowledge and experience, you have done so in such a way that now, it is my turn to give back to you.
I have created a project that combines two great passions of mine, the elimination of global health disparities and conversation around gender parity. It has become very near and dear to my heart. I am partnering with the organization, Days for Girls, to sew and assemble 250 feminine hygiene kits and help provide lasting health education to young girls in Chandelao, a small village in northern India. Since menstruation is a topic of taboo and source of shame, many young girls in developing countries miss numerous days in school, with some even dropping out. In India alone, only 12% of the 350 million women have access to sanitary pads. Next March in 2018, in honor of International Women’s Day, I will be traveling back to India to oversee the distribution of kits and health education.
Sometimes, I often contemplate if I’m forcing a change in narrative that could disrespect or dishonor a community’s culture. But I think it’s important to remember that people are keepers of culture and tradition, and that when any person is discriminated against, then maybe there should be change- there must be change.

In order for us to give hope and light to others, we first need to shine ourselves. It can be a challenge living in a world that has left us with such heavy hearts but I’m hoping that this project can be an opportunity for you to be a part of a monumental change in narrative. I’m asking you to please donate, share, and help give these beautiful and so deserving young girls not just lasting access to a hygiene solution, but an unshakable faith and belief in their own selves so that one day, they may look back on their accomplishments and dreams, and say to themselves, “And so I did.”
