Please help John “Andrew” Guthrie.
He is a good hardworking man, who dearly loves his family and friends, and is fighting his greatest foe – his own body. Andrew has a rapid form of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (A.L.S.) or otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
This has been a challenging disease for Andrew, who has always been very active throughout his 53 years. Be it as a volunteer Fire Fighter in the N.W.T. or 3+ years in British Columbia fighting the raging forest fires of the late 1980’s. Andrew finally decided to settle down in St Thomas and called it home; he worked in the local auto industry and did local deliveries for those that could not. He has worked and supported his children and grandchildren. Until now he was able to play with even his youngest child, who is 7 years old, as well as his grandchildren.
However, over the last 18 months A.L.S. has destroyed his body and has almost completely shut down his body. He can no longer move anything but his left arm and head. He is now considered non-verbal as he has lost 95% of his ability to talk and or communicate. Andrew now resides in a senior’s home in St. Thomas; ODSP covers his basic needs only. His monthly expenses far surpass his monthly allowance of $130.00 and we are now in the process of preparing for his end of life stage.
Please help Andrew prepare for the end of his fight with A.L.S. This disease will eventually destroy all that are inflicted with it. It is sad that all the money raised with THE ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE science has been unable to stop or offer any hope to those who have it. With your help, 1 patient whom will possibly pass from this world in 2019, can hold his head high and leave our world with dignity and pride knowing he took care of those he loved.
