The Andrei Postelnicu Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Andrei Postelnicu Memorial Scholarship Fund aims to honor Andrei's legacy as a self-made professional through the power of education, as well as his mentorship role in the lives of younger people.

Andrei Postelnicu believed in many causes; but he was unshakably passionate about education. He knew well how education can shape one's personal, cultural and intellectual development. He knew it was the key not only to personal success, but also to impacting personal growth to such extent that it could ultimately shape communities for the better.

Andrei's steadfast conviction in the power of education came from personal experience - he hailed from an educated but modest family in Constanta, Romania.  His mother, a teacher, instilled in him the value of interdisciplinary study from a very young age.  As a young man, he realized that the Romanian education system could only provide limited opportunities for his boundless curiosity and ambitions.  With the help of his high-school English teacher - and important lifelong mentor - Andrei applied for and obtained a Soros scholarship to complete high-school in the UK. From there, he went on to complete his undergraduate education on a full scholarship in the US.  Every summer, Andrei would compete for scholarships for summer schools and traineeships, both in Europe and the US, in an endless quest to broaden his horizons, to expand his opportunities and to become more competitive in his field.  His absolute favorite program was Georgetown University's AIPES summer school in Prague, the Czech Republic, which he completed in 1999.  The experience was deeply formative, and Andrei's text to honor it, 'Pivo for a broken heart' resonated with a lot of the program's alumni since - including those that he himself very much pushed to participate.

Throughout his life, Andrei very much appreciated and surrounded himself with role models whose didactic contribution and intellectual support, stimulation and inspiration were a constant source of energy in his everyday life. And, in time, he himself became a mentor to others.  Since his tragic and untimely passing in 2014, it has been touching to see how many people lined up to talk about his positive impact on their professional mindset and on their career path.

The Andrei Postelnicu Memorial Fund will honor Andrei's commitment to education, both formal and through mentorship.  For the next 10 years, the Fund will sponsor one or two students from underprivileged Romanian communities to participate in summer school programs abroad, including in Georgetown's AIPES program, which was so formative for Andrei.  It will thus offer young people of great potential, but with limited financial means, the opportunity to grow, thrive and expand their horizons.

Thank you for considering a donation to help us honor his memory and legacy.
