<div>Unser Vater, Andreas, kämpft gegen ALS. Und wir, seine Töchter, und unsere Mutter kämpfen mit ihm.

<div>Besonders dann, wenn das Leben härter zuschlägt, als man es je erwartet hätte.

<div>Bis vor einem Jahr war das Leben unseres Vaters noch ganz normal: fest im Berufsleben, die Rente fast in Sicht, immer für uns da. Mit unserer Mutter plante er seit Jahren eine große Reise nach Japan – das Herzensziel eines Judo-Schwarzgurts, der einmal im Leben dort stehen wollte, wo seine Kampfkunst geboren wurde.

<div>Doch dieser Traum steht gerade still. Nach einer Corona-Infektion im November 2024 begann etwas, das keiner verstand: erst Erschöpfung, dann ein seltsames Gefühl im Rücken. Im Februar die Krankschreibung. Eine Odyssee durch Arztpraxen, bis die Neurologie die Diagnose stellte, die niemand hören möchte: axiale ALS (Amyotrophe Lateralsklerose). Eine unheilbare Erkrankung mit einer prognostizierten Lebenserwartung von 1,5 bis 3 Jahren.

<div>Seit Mai wird unser Vater künstlich beatmet, seit September kann er Arme und Beine nicht mehr bewegen.
</div>

<div><strong>Doch Aufgeben ist keine Option. Nicht für ihn. Nicht für uns.</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Es gibt dokumentierte Reversals – Menschen, die den Verlauf nicht nur stoppen, sondern rückgängig machen konnten. Ein Team der Duke University erforscht genau das. Und so haben wir entschieden: Dort, wo für viele der Weg endet, beginnt für uns ein neuer. Wenn auch nur wenige Menschen vor uns dieses Wunder erlebt haben, zeigt uns das trotzdem, dass Statistiken Tendenzen zeigen – keine endgültigen Urteile.

<div>Wir haben eine ganzheitliche Klinik in Berlin gefunden, die uns auf diesem Weg begleitet. Dort werden nicht nur Symptome behandelt, sondern Ursachen. Das gesamte Team – Ärzt:innen, Therapeut:innen sowie die Mitarbeitenden in Organisation und Administration – ist nicht nur fachlich außergewöhnlich kompetent, sondern auch menschlich herzlich und engagiert. Und tatsächlich: Seit der Blutwäsche und der Stammzellentherapie wurde der rasante Krankheitsverlauf gestoppt. An einzelnen Tagen sehen wir winzige, aber echte Fortschritte. Und jeder kleine Fortschritt ist ein Schritt gegen die Prognose.

<div>Our father, Andreas, is fighting ALS. And we, his daughters, and our mother are fighting alongside him.
</div>

<div><em>Ohana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten. </em>Especially when life hits harder than you ever could have expected.
</div>

</div>
<div>Until a year ago, our father's life was completely normal: firmly established in his career, retirement almost in sight, always there for us. He and our mother had been planning a big trip to Japan for years — the heartfelt goal of a judo black belt who wanted, once in his life, to stand where his martial art was born.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>But that dream is now on hold. After a COVID infection in November 2024, something began that no one understood: first exhaustion, then a strange sensation in his back. In February, he was signed off work. An odyssey through doctors' offices followed, until neurology delivered the diagnosis no one ever wants to hear: axial ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). An incurable disease with a prognosed life expectancy of 1.5 to 3 years.

<div>Since May, our father has been on mechanical ventilation; since September, he can no longer move his arms or legs.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>But giving up is not an option. Not for him. Not for us.</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>There are documented reversals - people who have not only halted the progression, but reversed it. A team at Duke University is researching exactly this. And so we decided: where for many the path ends, for us a new one begins. Even if only a few people before us have experienced this miracle, it still shows us that statistics describe tendencies - not final verdicts.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We have found a holistic clinic in Berlin that is accompanying us on this path. There, not only symptoms are treated, but causes. The entire team - doctors, therapists, and the staff in organization and administration - is not only exceptionally competent professionally, but also warm and dedicated as people. And in fact: since the blood washing and stem cell therapy, the rapid progression of the disease has been stopped. On individual days we see tiny but real improvements. And every small step forward is a step against the prognosis.

<div>But this path is expensive. Our parents have invested all their savings into the treatment — and slowly things are getting tight.
