Clinical Medicine in Peru Summer 2014

Hello Family and Friends,

I have been blessed with the opportunity to volunteer with an organization called Healthy youth for 35 days in Peru during the summer of 2014. 

Healthy Youth, (which is actually written as Healthyouth) is an organization that strives to "support healthier communities by improving the health and well-being of youth."  This non-profit organization has many goals which include preventing HIV and other STD's by empowering youth about different forms of transmission, improving the healthy lifestyles of youth with educational achievement, and creating a global learning environment which promotes mutual understanding, diversity, leadership and more importantly cultural exchange.  Healthyouth offers many opportunities of varying lengths for volunteers during the summer and winter with programs in Gambia, Peru and Thailand. 

I feel beyond fortunate to have received the Clinical Medicine and Health Promotion position in Huancayo, Peru.  My everyday activities will include assisting doctors and nurses with patients, executing youth based health promotion campaigns and working with local shelters to provide food and tutoring for "street children."  I will be placed in clinics and hospitals around Peru and have the rare opportunity to work alongside Peruvian doctors and nurses. Here is a sample itinerary of my everyday duties:

7:00 am "“ Breakfast
8:00 am "“ Meet staff at the clinic
8:00 am "“ 2 pm "“ Work at the clinic, travel with staff to provide vaccinations to children at local schools, help with checkups etc. Depending on clinic needs, which will vary.  Lunch is at 12:00 pm
2 pm "“ 5 pm "“ Work with local church to tutor street children, learn Spanish lessons, guest lecturers and speakers at the group house
6 pm "“ Dinner with homestay family
7 pm "“ Free time

Your prayers, moral and financial support will help my family and I cover the expenses for this once in a lifetime opportunity.  I am aiming to raise $2500 which will help cover air and ground transportation, food and living expenses, airfare, visa fees, travelers insurance, all work related materials (badge, ID card, materials for teaching), pre-field preparatory kit (language guides, guide books, information sheets), professional lectures, special projects for communities and Language instruction when in Peru.
