Ancito Senior Year Fund

Help Ancito complete his college education! This will be his senior year at Lynchburg and we've successfully fundraised for the past 3 years. We're now in the final push to make his last year a success.

Ancito Etienne is a friend of mine who I met in Haiti in 2008. He was a former patient of ours at Partners In Health, who, after receiving lifesaving treatment in Boston, returned to Haiti to finish his schooling. He proceeded to volunteer with us during the 2010 earthquake translating for surgeons coming to help save lives for many months as schools were closed. He has been a teaching assistant for me in the leadership and global health course I teach at Brown over the past few summers, and has established a PIH Engage chapter at Lynchburg college, among many, many other accomplishments. This year we're making the final push to cover the cost of his schooling and we're about 2/3rds of the way there. We've been so very lucky with the generosity of so many who have supported him over the years and are trying this out to see what is possible to get us to the finish line. The funds will go directly to paying his tuition bill for the 2016-2017 school year, and are due by late July.

Please see Ancito's letter explaining more:

Dear Friends,
It is with great joy that I am writing to you as I finish my junior year at Lynchburg College and head to DC for a summer internship. I can’t believe that I will graduate in just one year! This has all been possible thanks to your incomparable generosity. I cannot express the depth of my gratitude for your steadfast help in this process. As a first generation student, graduating from college will be a dream come true. It is proof that the cycle of poverty can be broken, and a reminder that when underprivileged individuals are given the tools of an education, the impossible becomes possible. I am committed to helping other young people do the same.

As I move towards the last year of my college career, I am focused on my ultimate objectives in life, which include working in the Haitian government to alleviate poverty. I believe that attaining a high level of education is critical to ensuring my ability to tackle some of Haiti’s most pressing problems. Therefore, I plan on pursuing a higher degree either in Economics or in Medicine. I hope to discern, hopefully soon, which path my passion will lead me to. I will keep you informed!

Last year was amazing. I continued to be involved on campus in student organizations and with work. I worked as a French Tutor, served as the President of the Lynchburg College Partners in Health Engage Team, as the President of the Lynchburg College International Society, and as the Chancellor of the Nu Chi Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi. I was admitted into the Omicron Delta Kappa (National Leadership Honor Society) for my leadership on campus and into the Omicron Delta Epsilon (Int’l Honor Society for Economics) for excelling in my field of study at Lynchburg College.

I am very excited about my summer experience as a Policy and Advocacy intern with Mercy Corps in Washington DC. The internship will involve direct meetings with key congressional offices, participation in congressional briefings and hearings, review and commenting on draft legislation, active participation in discussions related to the foreign aid budget, and supporting members of Congress who are travelling with the Mercy Corps teams in the field. I very much look forward to this internship, as this is one of the ways I hope to bring change in my country.

Once again, thank you for your ongoing support towards my college education. My ultimate goal of returning to Haiti to participate in its rebuilding remains unbroken. Your support is keeping this goal alive.  I am deeply grateful for your investment in me and in Haiti.

Sincerely,
Ancito Etienne
