Ana's t-shirts for female empowerment

My name is Ana Jorge, I’m 23 years old and I live in a small town in Portugal. Since a long time ago, I have wanted to use the skills that I have learned and developed during my bachelor and master programs in Economics to help causes that are bigger than me.

Discrimination against minorities and social inequalities in general have always been subjects to which I felt quite close, and even wrote my master thesis about it. But there was always the feeling that I wasn't actively doing anything to fight it, or that my actions didn't have enough impact although I did enrolled in some projects and events focused on fighting social inequalities, both in my hometown and my universities.

Two months ago, I decided to try to apply to a volunteer project abroad. One project in particular caught my attention because it focuses on female empowerment in a country where women usually do not have access to the same social infrastructures than men. Two days after my application, I received the news that I was chosen and officially accepted to participate in it.

The project I applied to is in Paraguay and is called MbareteHer. It was developed by Programa Abrazo, which was in turn developed by the government of Paraguay to promote the participation of Paraguayan women in the formal economy of the country.

In Paraguay, women are mainly housewives, and their access to financial investments for particular business projects is very limited as gender inequality is still a major problem in the country. As it is, the project collects funds to allow women to invest in, launch and develop their own business projects.

My part in the project MbareteHer will be, together with the already existing team, to get into contact with partner companies and institutions, ease communication between these and the participating women, as well as organize events and activities both for the community and the companies.

Even though I have been working in a part-time job to be able to actually go to Paraguay, I still wasn’t able to collect enough money since I also have to pay for my current expenses in Portugal. Therefore, I aligned my need for money for Paraguay with something that I have been wanting to do for a while: start my own project.

So I created and started producing a brand of t-shirts and bags designed by myself (on Instagram: @SemModos) to help me finance my stay in Paraguay as well as my airplane tickets to go and come back to Portugal. The pictures you see are the ones I was already able to take for SemModos (or tried).

However, in order to produce these t-shirts, I need primary investment. Donations to this campaign will help me produce and sell as many t-shirts as possible and allow me to travel to Paraguay to participate in the project MbareteHer.

It takes about 9 euros to produce one t-shirt and I want to sell as many as possible. I’m setting the starting goal at 700 euros so that I’m able to produce enough t-shirts and bags to pay for my participation in the project MbareteHer, and help Programa Abrazo make a meaningful and powerful contribution to gender equality in Paraguay with everything necessary and within my reach.

Even though these people may be very far away from me and you, every cause is a good cause if it aims to develop people’s lives and MbareteHer is an extremely important project for this community, but it needs people - as volunteers - to grow and have a real impact.

Please help me help as many people as I can. Everyone could use some extra love and care, and with my t-shirts and bags, I’ll contibute a bit with my share.

Thank you again very much for being willing to help to make a difference!
