Ana Karen Porras Educational Fund

Donation protected
María del Carmen Porras Hernández was struck and killed by a motorist on Monday, July 8, 2019, at the intersection of Coney Island Avenue and Church Avenue in Brooklyn, New  York.

A single mother, she left behind her daughter, Ana Karen Porras, 13 years old. Her father long absent from her life, Ana Karen is scheduled to start high school in the fall. She is currently being looked after by her maternal aunt, Laura Porras.

As a community we want to raise money for Ana Karen's educational needs. The goal is to have a fund for her school expenses and, once she finishes high school, for college or vocational training.

Nothing will bring her mother back. But as a community we can support this young girl who, between middle school and high school, has suffered a devastating blow: becoming an orphan.

The proceeds from this campaign will be used to set up a trust fund at a bank that will ensure there is something for her as she now continues with to live her life under these new and tragic circumstances.

This is how the media reported the accident:

The campaign has elicited such a response that, for the purposes of clarity and transparency, additional information is being provided:

1. The organizer of this GoFundMe is the representative of the family. Ana Karen Porras is a minor and her aunt, and guardian, Laura Porras is not fluent in English. Mrs. Porras has requested that the Organizer take care of the GoFundMe campaign.

2. I am a neighbor, fluent in Spanish, and Ana Karen's mother used to work cleaning apartments in my building, 135 Ocean Parkway.

3. At present I am assisting the family in this difficult time coordinate things that are needed, such as alerting the high school where Ana Karen will attend about the situation. The counselor there, Mrs. Gattuso, with whom I am in contact with, has already reached out to the family and the school's social worker. I have also been in contact with the media; when reporter Zainab Iqbal of BKLYNER.com asked for information and permission to use material, I granted it (see my name credited on the photographs I took of the altar at the Porras residence: https://bklyner.com/kensington-pedestrian-crash-update/?). I have also coordinated with places where well wishers can drop off funds, including Laundromat Mania at 411 Ditmas Avenue, where Maria del Carmen worked.

4. Once GoFundMe issues a disbursement, a bank account on behalf of Ana Karen Porras will be opened at a bank. Only Laura Porras, her maternal aunt, will be a signatory until Ana Karen Porras becomes of legal age for opening her bank account.

5. For the sake of complete transparency, a) Laura Porras will sign a notarized statement that confirms receipt of the proceeds; and b) the name and contact information of the account executive will be provided so anyone can confirm that an account for Ana Karen's future educational needs has been established at the bank.
