While in Florida, I was working on the last part of a house project which was the metal roof. It was July 18th, I had been away from home since June 4th, this roof was between me and home! It was a Tuesday, Joan was flying down on Saturday and we were going to drive home together on Monday the 24th.  At 4:18 pm, July 18th I fell off the roof and broke my back. I burst my L1 vertebrae which is also pressing up against my spinal cord. Burst meaning the bone that makes up the vertebrae is broken into pieces. The trauma to my back runs from the T11 to the L3.

On August 30th, I had major surgery. First, they made an incision in my side for a thoracic surgeon to go in and move vital organs out of the way and for the removal of a rib. This allowed access to the L2 and T12 enabling the neurosurgeon to place 12 screws, two rods and a plate, then the incision was closed. I was then placed on my stomach and the neurosurgeons proceed to open the area needed to remove the upper and lower disk of the L1 (burst site). Then they cut out all the bone matter of the L1 which was used to make a paste along with the rib that was removed. The paste was then used in and around a frame and placed and molded in the void area of the L1. With this all-in place let the Lumbar fusion healing begin! AMEN!

The healing process is said to take 12+ months. I will not be able to do any bending, lifting and twisting “BLT” for 6 to 9 months then 9 to 12 months for the fusion to heal completely. It takes much longer to get back to work that requires strenuous physical activity due to the increased stress these activities play on the healing bone graft. For the past 30+ years I have supported myself and family with my home improvement business, Overall Services.

I may not be able to return to the work I love and have enjoyed while helping others have their home dreams come true. This is due to the years of wear and tear on my T11 and L3 that may not take the added stress of the Fusion at a strenuous level. I so enjoyed the demolition part of the job, constructing it all back together and seeing the smiles on the faces of my clients as their dreams became a reality!

My part in this is to abide by the doctor’s rules, do what I can when I can, heal and get as strong as I can.

Meanwhile I am not able to create income to do my part in meeting our financial obligations.  I am hopeful that this will help lift some of the burden from Joan as she has now become the sole household financial provider along with being my sweet caregiver. We understand times are difficult for everyone, but hope you can find it in your heart to donate your pocket change. Please share with your friends as the more people who are aware the greater the impact of support and help can be. Thank you for all your prayers, love and support. God Bless
