The Story So Far …
In 2012 I made my first trip to Vietnam with a group of girlfriends. As part of our tour we visited Streets Café, a charity that takes children from severely disadvantaged circumstances and trains them in hospitality skills and English for eighteen months, thus enabling them to find work. A student named Thuy took us on a tour of the local markets. I was so impressed with her optimism and friendliness that I later wrote to Streets to say how much we enjoyed the tour. They put me in contact with Thuy and by email we became friends.
Several years later Thuy was married to Tri and I was privileged to be invited to her wedding, which I attended in her hometown. Over time I learned more about Thuy. Unable to afford education for Thuy, her parents had sent her to live in An Tay Children’s home in Hue. She lived there, from the age of twelve until Streets offered her the opportunity to train with them. Greg and I became interested in the home and wanted to help in some way.
Last year we held a garage sale, which raised $3,500. We went to Vietnam to buy what the children needed most. With Thuy’s help, we bought warm jackets for all of the children, crates of long life milk to help ward off illness during the cold winter months and three Honda electric bikes which enable the older children to travel to their local high school (three per bike!). Friends also chipped in and helped with toys for the children. A dollar goes a long way in Vietnam and we even had some money left over which Thuy has used over the past year to buy more milk and to give the children a wonderful day in Hoi An at the beach.
On November 1, Greg and I will visit the orphanage again. We hope to raise $4,000 this year to buy mattresses for the children (who usually sleep on wooden slats), blankets, warm slippers and jackets and long life milk which will make the winter months more tolerable and hopefully keep them well. We’ll also take them to a local water fun park for the day.
If you can help with any donation, big or small, we promise that every cent will be spent to help the children at An Tay.
If you're free on Saturday October we also extend an invitation to join us for dinner (a few days before we leave for Vietnam) at our home. We'll provide a wonderful three-course meal, wine, live music and entertainment. Cost is $75. All money will go to the fund raiser.
