Amy Neel was taking her son, Preston, to school on Monday, November 26th. They were traveling east on Hwy 10 when another driver, traveling westbound, attempted to pass in a no passing zone. Without warning, the other car struck Amy's SUV head on, and Amy's vehicle flipped.
The accident was so severe that she was pinned in the car for nearly 2 hours while rescue workers cut her out of the vehicle. As a result of the impact, Amy was seriously injured. She suffered a broken pelvis, a broken femur, and a severely crushed lower leg and ankle.
Amy was transported to Carolinas Medical Hospital - Trauma Center in Charlotte for treatment. So far, she has had multiple surgeries to stabilize her pelvis and lower leg and has additional surgeries scheduled for the future.
Aside from normal medical fees, there is a need to rent a handicap accessible vehicle during rehab, and receive in home health care as she recovers.
For her livelihood, Amy is self-employed, and operates a hairdresser business with her husband, Harry, in Hickory. It is unknown how long it will be until Amy is able to return to work, but she faces a long road to recovery and rehabilitation.
