Send A MUSE ZOO to Capital Fringe!

Friends, family, kind strangers: We need your help to get to Capital Fringe in Washington, DC!

We are A Muse Zoo: A physical theatre company that uses mime, clowning, political satire and vaudevillian humor to bring stories to life. We have an original show, The Truth*, that we can’t wait to take to Capital Fringe in Washington, DC and the greater United States. We’re fundraising for our 2018 Summer Tour starting in June and need your help! We will be performing The Truth*  in cities and fringe festivals across the country.

Last October, The Truth* debuted in Ashland, Oregon. It was well received and we feel pretty darn proud of what we created! It’s a hilarious, dark, twisted, comedy about political power and the winners of war. In The Truth*, we highlight and deconstruct the one-sided narrative we learn in school, from the news, and via social media. In doing so, we start to understand that everyone’s history is different and sometimes “the truth” isn’t relevant, but the experiences of the people always are. As George Orwell famously said, “History is written by the winner.”

We’re so ready and super excited to share our show with a broader audience in Washington, DC! During its run in Ashland, audience members expressed that they rarely encounter this genre of theatre so well executed and we want to offer this experience to a wider community. By taking The Truth* on the road, we hope to stress the importance of questioning history and the news, especially in our current political climate. By using what are often considered antiquated forms of theatre (clowning, mime, slapstick, vaudeville, etc.) and bringing them to a modern context, we hope to accentuate the hilarity of our society’s faux pas. On this three-month tour, we’re also hoping to meet and gain inspiration from other companies, helping us expand our theatrical style and ignite new opportunities. As artists whose ultimate goal is to entertain and provoke thought, this tour will allow us to see humanity through a wider lens and broaden our abilities as artists.

The idea for The Truth* sparked in early spring of 2017. We decided to get down to brass tacks and dedicated an entire summer to rehearsals, five days a week. What did we do during those long, grueling rehearsals, you ask? We wrote and wrote and rewrote, scrapped half our show and wrote it again. We found costumes, researched, made clown noses, sewed, hot glued, power tooled and built props. We previewed the show for our friends, and finally, we built a set that’s mobile and easy to set up and take down. We directed, acted, designed, built, sweat, bled and sacrificed our social lives (and a newborn goat) in order to produce this show.

But seriously. We put a lot of hard work into The Truth* and we’re REALLY proud of what we created.

Our tour is roughly 10,000 miles long. With two cars packed to the brim with our sets, props and camping gear, we’re planning to be on the road for three months. We’re performing at Capital Fringe in Washington, DC, IndyFringe in Indianapolis, IN as well as smaller venues in between. We’re hoping to make money teaching workshops and performing along the way but regardless, this is an expensive endeavor. The money we raise will go directly towards fringe costs, travel expenses and venue fees. The more you donate, the more we can perform! To break it down even further, your donations will go towards:

Fringe Fees: $1450
Venue Costs: $2300
Lodging: $1200
Gas: $2700 (10,000 miles x 2 cars averaging at 22 mpg)

In addition to working our own part time jobs, we have been performing locally and teaching workshops to raise money but we still need your help! We’re sincerely grateful for anything you can contribute, whether it’s donating to our campaign or sharing it with your friends and family.

Thank you for all your help and stay tuned for exciting tour updates in the coming weeks!

Sincerely,
