We are part of the team that discovered hundreds of children being warehoused in abusive conditions at border facilities in Texas in June 2019 and we need your help. During the two weeks that we interviewed over 100 children, they entrusted us with their stories. They did this because they believed in the goodness of America. So do we.
That is why we have decided to launch a national campaign to ensure that what we witnessed never happens again. Although we will continue to bear witness to what we saw during those site visits, we believe that the American public needs to hear from the children themselves. Thus, we are building a national campaign around the children’s own accounts of what was done to them in their own words.
We have compiled sworn declarations from the children and made them easily available to the public at AmplifytheChildren.org so that anyone can read the children’s accounts and know the truth about what we have done as a nation (they have also been filed in federal court by the children’s attorneys). They are not easy to read.
The truth and power of these children’s stories in their own words provide us with a defining point in our nation’s history. Who have we become? Who do we want to be?
Will you help us launch an honest, open, and constructive public dialogue based upon truth and accountability that compels us to talk across differences so that we can identify those remaining values that hold us together as a civilization? Can we agree to keep families together and stop abusing children in our nation’s care?
We are envisioning a nationally crowd-sourced creative forward campaign that is fueled by these children’s stories involving theater, poetry, music, art installations, sermons, prayers, paintings, public readings, social media posts, tweets, recordings, digital space, and more. Anyone can participate including you!
Our goal is simple. Establish clear standards for children in government care so that what we discovered in our nation’s border facilities never happens again. Congressional leaders have assured us that this can be done, even in this hyper-partisan era, but only if we keep the public pressure on so that these children remain a priority. We are going to give it everything we’ve got but we need your help.
After we returned from Texas in June, we founded “Project Amplify,” a Washington nonprofit corporation, so that we could honor the children we met by sharing their stories in their own words, but we need help jumpstarting the effort.
All funds raised through the GoFundMe campaign will be used only for actual costs and will not be used to compensate anyone from our nonprofit, which is run entirely by devoted volunteers. Lawyer Moms Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization has generously agreed to serve as our fiscal sponsor with the IRS so that all contributions would be eligible for tax deductibility to the extent allowable by law. Lawyer Moms Foundation's tax identification number is 83-1962015.
Even if you cannot donate, we hope that you will go to www.amplifythechildren.org
, read these children’s stories, and find a way to amplify their voices with the talents, connections, and resources you have so that we can ensure that any child entrusted to our nation’s care is treated with the humanity and respect they deserve. Thank you!
