Coral Reef Alliance

Tax deductible
UPDATE *** Due to the rapid spread of Covid-19 and the loss of many jobs, I have adjusted my goal from $6,000 to $2,000, and have not personally been able to keep up with donating $10 every Friday, as was my original pledge. I realize that now is an unprecedented time to expect to meet an already ambitious goal. I thank everyone for their continued support.

We are entering a new decade. Moments of reflection and resolutions of change are taking place. If you are like me, you harbor a renewed sense of optimism, empathy and motivation for what this next decade can bring.

This is why today, exactly 8 months ahead of my 21st birthday, I’m initiating a GofundMe for The Coral Reef Alliance. My goal is to raise ***$2,000 by August 25th. The great news is that you have 8 entire months to give what you can, when you can! I am modeling my own giving after Greta Thunberg’s Fridays for Future; as someone who receives a paycheck every Friday of the month, I pledge $10 of every paycheck towards the Coral Reef Alliance until August 25th.

Coral reef structures play a vital role in our ecosystem and to human life. While they cover only roughly 1% of the ocean floor, coral reefs are home to over 25% of all marine life. They provide feeding areas, spawning areas and nurseries, protection, and homes to thousands of different species. Fishing industries rely on the health of coral reefs to act as spawning areas and nurseries for commercially sought-after species, not to mention the role reefs play in tourism and economic growth for many areas around the world. Reefs we see today are hundreds, even thousands of years old. Like trees, coral reefs are living organisms that can take years to regenerate once destroyed.

Reefs also reduce the damage from storms, hurricanes, and even the energy of tsunamis. They absorb wave energy and contribute to environmental protection through the reduction of coastal erosion. In doing so, they protect both ecosystems located between the reefs and coasts, including seagrass and lagoons and human settlements located by the sea.

The Coral Reef Alliance monitors and protects reefs and marine life amidst the ever present challenges of climate change. I hope you will consider spreading this fundraiser to help me reach my goal.
