Aminata's medical care in Ghana

Aminata lives with her husband, Yayah, and her 3 young children – Janday 10 years, Moinama 8 years, and Yeani 3 years – in Sierra Leone. Aminata is a nurse and loves spending time with her children. Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with breast cancer this past July and urgently needs to undergo surgery followed by chemotherapy; services which are not available in country. As such, she has found a hospital in Ghana that can provide the care that she needs as of December 2020.

Aminata urgently needs to spend approximately 8 straight months in Ghana away from her children. She has estimated that the costs for the surgery and chemotherapy, the plane ticket and other logistics in Ghana, lodging and food will cost approximately USD 18,000 depending on the length of care required. Having known Yayah and Aminata for over 13 years, during my time working and living in Sierra Leone a few years after the end of the civil war, I know that they have the mental strength to get through this adversity. However, they do not have the financial means to cover this kind of costly treatment, especially as Aminata doesn’t have a health insurance that covers care outside of Sierra Leone.
